The Punt Road wines are all grown and made on site. This is the philosophy of winemaker, Tim Shand. He wants to have control over his wines every step of the way, from vineyard to bottle. From the quality of his current releases, this approach is working a treat. Great stuff all round from Tim.
This Chardonnay is a cracker.
It’s built with more generosity of flavour than many young Yarra Valley Chardonnays. The hand-picked fruit is pressed as whole bunches straight to French oak. Some fermented wild, some malo, some lees stirring - Tim giving himself a suite of choices for the final composite blend.
This is a round and flavoursome style of Chardonnay which perfectly conveys the quality of the 2015 Yarra Valey vintage. Great value and loads of appeal for under $30.
What It Tastes Like
Peaches and limes, some grilled nuts and a hint of creme brûlée. There’s a long thread of acid that runs through the wine giving focus to the toasty, voluptuous fruit. This mouth-filling but never overbearing. Lots to like here.
93 points. “Hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed direct to French puncheons (20% new) for full solids wild ferment, 20% mlf, lees-stirred monthly, bottled Dec. Elegant wine, neatly encapsulating the Yarra Valley style courtesy of its winemaking (and place). There is a gentle touch of funk on the bouquet, but this is replaced by an extra edge of texture on the palate to accompany the citrus and stone fruits. The only slight query is the mlf.”

Near perfect conditions in 2015 with a cool January and warm spells in February and March allowed for gradual maturation, great acid retention, and solid crop with even ripeness. Phenolic maturity (brown seeds/stems) was spot on, and we took the opportunity to experiment with skin contact on whites and more whole bunch use in reds. While it wasn’t the easiest year, it was certainly the most exciting, and wines from this vintage are showing great vitality and aging potential.

Carefully hand-picked and whole bunch pressed; 100% of the juice was barrel fermented, a portion of which was fermented naturally. During 10 months maturation in French oak (20% new), some barrels were regularly stirred to build texture and complexity.
