- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Pooley is well and truly amongst Tasmania’s premier Pinot producers and here is another wine that hammers home that point.
Their Butcher’s Hill vineyard is a north-facing site overlooking the Pooley cellar door, and it seems each vintage as these vines get older this wine pushes the envelope further and further. The 2015 vintage provided naturally powerful, yet impressively pretty fruit, with winemaker Anna Pooley utilising 15% whole bunches and around 30% new oak to add further smoke, grip and oomph to what is remarkable fruit. This is some Pinot.
The 2015 vintage received a sensational review from Gary Walsh (94 points), and this release has gone to yet another gear. All class.
What It Tastes Like
“The 2015 is brilliant ruby red in colour. Nose of culinary herbs, red fruits, cherry cola, rhubarb with a lift of lavender. This medium bodied wine has excellent tannin structure with power and intensity across the palate.” - Pooley Wines
96 points. “Clones 114, 115, MV6 and 777, hand-picked, bunch-sorted, 15% whole bunches, the remainder destemmed whole berries, no crushing, open-fermented with cultured yeast, 18 days on skins, matured in French barriques (35% new) for 13 months. Vibrant and lively, with a super-fragrant red berry bouquet and palate; the most instantly enjoyable of the four Pooley Pinots, with a long and airy finish.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
94 points. “Spice, cherry, sarsaparilla, dried herb, vanilla. Medium bodied, dark cherry and raspberry – quite juicily fruited – a bit of mineral and charcuterie, balanced acidity, fine gravelly tannin, cherry and sap on firm long finish. Cool. Needs time to settle down.”
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
Situated on the sunny north slope of Butcher’s Hill, the youngest of Pooley’s Pinot Noir vines are planted to well-drained dolerite with an underpinning of limestone. The hand-picked fruit was fermented with an inclusion of 15% whole bunches, macerating for a total of 20 days. Élevage took place predominantly in barriques, with some puncheons employed, 30% of the oak being new.

Excellent line, length and balance – will build and develop over the coming decade.

About the Producer
Now in the hands of third generation winemaker Anna Pooley, this family owned operation from Coal River in Tasmania is going from strength to strength.
If you love the purity and refinement to be found in the cool-climate wines of the Apple Isle, Pooley is a brand you need to get to know.
No variety captures the hearts and minds of the wine lover quite like Pinot Noir. It’s the unicorn of many a winemaker. Notoriously fickle to grow, this delicate red variety can deliver a kaleidoscope of flavours and aromas, from the bright and floral to the moody and mysterious and everything in between. The cooler regions of Australia are where Pinot Noir is most at home. Look to Tasmania and Victoria for the best examples, with some quality wines beginning to show from the Great Southern and from the cooler parts of NSW. Falling in love with Pinot Noir can be a life long affair, beware the charms of this most enchanting of grapes.
