- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Sangiovese from the Yarra Valley is not overly common currently, but it’s bound to get more popular with deliciously smashable versions like this popping up.
The Payten & Jones boys say this wine makes itself. If that’s the case, the fruit is doing a fine job of it. A bright and juicy, immediately inviting style of Sangiovese here, not the dry, dusty wines so commonly associated with the variety.
Dig in, with food it’s a ripper.
What It Tastes Like
Juicy and fleshy style of Sangiovese. Macerated cherries, plums and spices. Firm tannin but not rough. It gives structure where needed, but doesn’t impinge on the overall glugable stylings. Fun, modern take on the variety. Good stuff.
Sangiovese, why you so easy?? This variety makes itself from this vineyard. All we have to do is look at it over the top of the newspaper once a day. Raspberries, juniper, dried herbs. Enjoy a bottle with Lamb Shoulder or any protein really.

About the Producer
Payten & Jones
From school mates to business partners, the two boys who form Behn Payten & Troy Jones have been destined to work together for many years. They are now making small batches of slightly edgy wine from the Yarra Valley. The wines are made with minimal cleaning up, the duo believing that if you take out too much, you can fine and filter the soul out of a wine. They do things their own way and that’s the way they like it.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
