- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Nathan Reeves and David Chatfield have hardly put a foot wrong with their Out of Step wines and this 2015 Nebbiolo is another home run for the Yarra-based duo. Their philosophy revolves around sourcing fruit from some of Victoria's most prized vineyards, and when it comes to Nebbiolo, the _Malakoff vineyard_ in the Pyrenees is as prized as it gets. It has great approachability as far as Nebb goes - it's not overly astringent, but full of beautifully concentrated fruit without losing any varietal character. Campbell Mattinson described this as "a rip-roaring nebbiolo... getting into ‘wow’ territory"._ It is without doubt the best release of this wine to date. Just 215 dozen produced, and simply a must buy for Nebbiolo lovers.
What it Tastes Like
"It casts a spell. Last year’s release was excellent; this is better again. The perfume, the character, the spread, the command. Tobacco, leather, dark chocolate, orange rind, roasted nuts and asphalt. Licorice. It’s got it all going on. But it’s not just the flavours themselves. It’s the drama of it. Some warmth perhaps but the power through the finish, the feeling that you can’t look away: this is getting into ‘wow’ territory." - Campbell Mattinson
94 points. "This is a rip-roaring nebbiolo out of the Pyrenees. Wild fermented. Matured in old oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. The crying shame is: only 215 dozen were made. It casts a spell. Some warmth perhaps but the power through the finish, the feeling that you can’t look away: this is getting into ‘wow’ territory." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
Malakoff is one of those places where, to me, it looks like it would be a bugger to do anything but grow grapes. Hard red ferrous clay soils with heavy deposits of ironstone & quartz interspersed throughout. Combined with warm & dry conditions through the growing season (though with cooler nights) it presents a myriad of challenges. But it also produces fruit of great intensity, predominantly shiraz & nebbiolo, now widely sought after by producers in the know. From vines planted in 2000 by the John family & still meticulously farmed by them to this day, & from a vintage that was pretty much a cracker all across Victoria, we present our third exploration of the site in the 2015 Malakoff Estate Vineyard Nebbiolo. Hand picked, destemmed to 4 x one ton open pots & wild yeast fermented. Gently plunged daily, pressed after 12 days, barreled down for a couple of weeks then racked & blended before maturing for around 8 months in old hogs heads. Racked again, settled (but not filtered or fined) before being bottled in November 2015. Released September 2016.

About the Producer
Out Of Step
The thing that stands out about the Out Of Step range is the complete lack of pretension in the wines.
The duo of Nathan Reeves and David Chatfield make wine by the philosophy that, “To be great it must be real, expressive & honest.”
Based in the Yarra Valley, these two are forging a reputation for serious, eye catching wines at a great price.
The Pyrenees is renowned for its wines of presence and grace. Whether it is Syrah, Cabernet or Nebbiolo, the cool slopes of the Pyrenees consistently produce some of Victoria’s most remarkable wines. Classically, the wines are loaded with power and spice, with loads of flavour and great cellaring potential. One of the gems of Victoria wine.
Nebbiolo is one of the world’s truly great wine grapes. Most famously produced in the Italian regions of Barolo and Barbaresco, this king-pin of varieties is making a surge on Australian soil. A notoriously late ripening variety, Australian producers are constantly refining the way they grow this grape. Nebbiolo wines are light to medium bodied with incredible internal power and structure. These wines can live for decades when grown on the right sites. The classic descriptors of ‘tar & roses’ are often applied to this variety but the scope for complexity and nuance in the best versions is virtually limitless. The life of a great Nebbiolo as it matures through the years is one of the great wonders in all of wine.
