This is a ripping Chardonnay from one of Victoria’s most underrated regions.
Gippsland has some amazing fruit, and slowly producers from surrounding regions are picking up on it. Here, Mornington Peninsula cult favourite Onannon have teamed up with Bill Williams at Tambo Estate to make a beautiful Chardonnay that is right on the money.
The 2015 vintage received 95 points from James Halliday and 92 points from Mike Bennie, if you are exploring the myriad of Chardonnay on offer from Victoria nowadays, this is one of the best you will find from this corner of the State.
What It Tastes Like
“Bright perfume of floral things, citrus, sea spray, sandalwood. Palate is crisp and clean, lean and lightly juicy, moves at velocity and finishes with oatmeal and woody sweet spice. Acidity is perky, the wine feels ultra fresh. It’s crackling and crispy and lean and good. Refreshing, breezy, great drinking chardonnay.” - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
95 points. “A stylish chardonnay with the abundant flavour East Gippsland can provide, protected in this instance by the exclusion of mlf. As it is, the flavour spectrum is firmly stone fruit/melon/fig, acidity the key in keeping the fruit under control, and simultaneously providing length.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
92 points “I like the vibe of Gippsland chardonnay. Glad to see more people having a crack at it. Team Onannon here going forth with a cool, clean expression.

This is the third year we have worked with Bill Williams and the team at Tambo Estate (19 years old, I10). Bill painstakingly sorted the fruit which was placed straight into a cool room as it was being picked and trucked back in the cool of the night to be processed straight away. We crushed and threw a little whole bunch into the press, settled the juice overnight and then racked it to barrel. We played around with different levels of solids. A Combination of yeasts were used to help build some complexity. No MLF. 20% new French Oak. 10 months in the barrel.
Closure: Screw Cap
Bottle Size: 750ml
About the Producer
Onannon was founded by Will Byron, Kaspar Hermann and Sam Middleton.
Their commitment is to crafting outstanding wines that speak honestly of the Victorian regions they source from. With relationships from Gippsland to Mornington Peninsula, the refinemnet of these wines is second to none.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
