Winemaker Dave Bicknell and Yarra Valley Chardonnay are like two peas in a pod.
Bicknell has done much to help shape the modern style of Yarra Valley Chardonnay, many believe he has the midas touch with the variety and is one of the country’s very best exponents of it.
The Over The Shoulder Chardonnay is nothing short of remarkable value. The 2015 vintage was near to perfect from the region, this hand-picked fruit from across the Yarra as good as you are likely to ever see. It’s made with care and skill far beyond the norm for wines of this price.
Gorgeous stuff and an unbeatable daily drinking Chardonnay.
What It Tastes Like
“Classic Yarra Valley Chardonnay at a keen price. Lime and white peach, touch of spice and matchstick, with cashew and a subtle herbal top note. Light and fine boned, but flavoursome too, with cool acidity, flinty feel and a clean lime and peach aftertaste. I know it’s sold to drink now, but I’d suggest keeping it until 2017, so it can mesh and come together a bit more. Regardless, very good wine.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
94 points “From Coldstream and three Upper Yarra sites (Woori Yallock, Gladysdale and Wandin). It’s all about finely strung Yarra chardonnay, not about the winemaker or his thumbprints other than respect for the fruit. White peach, melon and citrussy acidity provide the flavour.”

A warm spring and mild summer has resulted in excellent crops and ideal harvesting conditions. The wines have outstanding depth of flavor and structure.
Vineyards This chardonnay was mostly sourced from vineyards in Coldstream, Woori Yallock, Gladysdale and Wandin using handpicked grapes and crafted using traditional methods.
Handpicked grapes chilled then whole bunch pressed with half going directly to barrel for a natural fermentation and ageing on yeast lees for 10 months. The other half was pressed to tank for fermentation, then once was complete, transferred to barrel for maturation. After maturation the unified blend was cold stabilised and lightly bentonite fined prior to bottling with a single filtration.

About the Producer
Oakridge is one of the Yarra Valley’s most respected wineries. Under the direction of master winemaker Dave Bicknell, it has been a major player in defining the modern styles of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the Yarra over the last decade. From the elite 864 range to the amazing value Over The Shoulder range, there’s quality at the core of everything Oakridge puts its hand to.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
