- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
This delicious drop from Ben Riggs at the prolific producer Mr. Riggs is absolutely indicative of Montepulciano's charm. It comes from a single vineyard in the northern end of the Adelaide Hills, a cooler region for this variety, but one now with a proven track record of quality. This vintage was named as the Best Australian Red Single-Varietal at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2017 as well as picking up two Gold Medals at the China Wine & Spirits Awards for 2017, high praise for a modestly priced wine such as this. It's a great drop, easy drinking and a terrific introduction to this booming variety.
What it Tastes Like
"Powerful nose, an abundence of dark cherry, blackberry and black plum, slightly chocolatey. Full bodied but still retains great freshness, exciting combination of ripe fruit, spice, savoury notes. With rustic tannins, will improve with age." - Decanter World Wine Awards 2017
Platinum Medal - Best Australian Red Single-Varietal "Powerful nose, an abundence of dark cherry, blackberry and black plum, slightly chocolatey. Full bodied but still retains great freshness, exciting combination of ripe fruit, spice, savoury notes. With rustic tannins, will improve with age." - Decanter World Wine Awards 2017 Double Gold Medal - 2017 China Wine & Spirits Awards 90 points. "It’s an interesting wine. Plenty going on for sure, though whether our not it’s all positive will depend on personal taste. It’s rubbery, smoky, reductive and laden with spice, but it’s also awash with fresh, blackberried, black cherried fruit – amplified further by asphalt-like notes, and smoky/vanillin oak. A rugged set of tannins complex a hearty picture. Personally I’d be all over it but then, I also like crooked teeth." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
Bright violet and rich red roll around the glass opaque, vibrant, and alive with aromas of beef stock and crushed mint. Hints of cinnamon spice right through a palate that graduates to both sweet tobacco and the cigar-box that held it; the finish lingers with vanilla straight from the pod. Only serious structure can contain this kitchen of flavour and it does so spectacularly. Firm where it should be, subtle when needed. Intense throughout.
