- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
There’s a lot of marketing spin out there about ‘natural’ wines, but the producers who truly practice what they preach produce wines that honestly showcase the vineyard.
Mike Boudry and Greta Moon have worked hard on their biodynamic vineyard in Nagambie to get it to a place where the wine makes itself.
The Moon Marsanne is whole bunch pressed to stainless tanks, left for a long natural ferment which took four weeks, then lees stirred to develop mouthfeel. Nothing crazy, just simple, honest winemaking.
The 2015 is crisp but with depth of flavour and some individual qualities derived purely from the distinctive terroir of the region.
A wine that will be loved by the white Rhone devoté.
What It Tastes Like
Banana and hazelnut, graefruit and lemon pith. There’s a slight phenolic grip to it which drags the wine into place. It’s glossy and highly polished but with a natural flow. Classy version of the variety which feels stripped back to is core.
2015 MOON Marsanne
This Biodynamic wine is made from fruit grown in our Goulburn Terrace vineyard, on the banks of the Goulburn river at Nagambie, in Central Victoria
The Marsanne vines are grown on a level area of the vineyard with clay loam soil becoming more clay dominated at depth.
The 2015 growing season was a few degrees warmer than average throughout the spring, returning to normal conditions from January onwards. Rainfall was around half the average overall, but reasonable rain in every second month avoided any water stress on the vines. The fruit was harvested by hand in early March at a yield of just under 2 tonnes/acre.
Grapes were crushed directly into the press basket, with the stems separated and added back to the basket in layers to help juice drainage. A light pressing produced 530 litres/tonne of juice, and the hour or so in the press provided the only skin contact.
After cold settling, the juice was slowly fermented in a stainless steel tank, taking around 4 week to become dry. The wine was then closed up and left on lees for a further 12 months, before being racked and allowed to clarify. It was then gravity bottled without fining or filtration under Diam corks.
The extended lees contact has given the wine an interesting mid-palate complexity and fullness that is often lacking in a young Marsanne. Over time this will be complemented by the honey characters that the variety typically develops with age. Alcohol is 12.5%.
The wine is certified Biodynamic by NASAA.

About the Producer
MOON wines come from the Goulburn Terrace vineyard, on the banks of the Goulburn River at Nagambie, in Central Victoria.
Their wine styles are very traditional, perhaps a bit old world. The emphasis is on building structure and complexity, and the wines tend to be savoury, with fruit characters contributing to the deliciousness of the wine without dominating the palate. Where wines are fermented or matured in barrels, we use mostly old French wood, so that any oak flavour is subtle.
