The Single Vineyard Pinot Noir releases are the top of the Montalto tree. These wines aim to showcase the distinctive characters of some of the finest vineyards in the Mornington Peninsula region. The 2015 releases are on fire, with the Tuerong vineyard perhaps the most impressive of them all. This was named as the Top Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir in a recent panel tasting for Gourmet Traveller Wine and already has considerable show circuit success. With only 200 dozen made, this will be the first Montalto Pinot Noir to sell out from the phenomenal 2015 vintage.

A highly aromatic wine displaying immense complexity. Blackberry and kirsch notes combine with graphite, cherry, and earthy undertones. There’s a whole-bunch floral and fragrant perfume hovering together with some subtle dried herbs and black olive. The palate is structured, but shows restraint and elegance as the saturating fruits dissolve into the savoury finish. This wine will reward cellaring.

Montalto are one of the quiet achievers of the Mornington Peninsula. Under the guidence of gun winemaker Simon Black they have amassed an enviable portfolio of vineyards and and wines from across the region. With the obvious focus being on Burgundian varieties, there are plenty of surprises to be had in the Montalto range including a cracking cool-climate Shiraz and some interesting aromatic whites and Rose.
The Mornington Peninsula has become a go-to destination for lovers of modern Australian Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Mornington’s perfect climatic conditions for producing these varieties has seen it become, in only a relatively short time, one of the premier regions for these varieties in the country. The wines are beautiful. The best examples are wines which show a restrained power. Both intensity and elegance. It’s a region which will continue to blossom and mature for many years to come.
