- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Who said you have to pay a lot of dough to drink good wine? No one who has tried Mike Press' range, that's for sure! The Shiraz is sourced from 17-year-old vines on the Mike Press estate in the Adelaide Hills. Cool climate fruit seasoned with American oak may not be the most 'in vogue' idea at the moment, but as they say, the proof is in the pudding. The 2015 vintage was a cracker in the Adelaide Hills, one that was very conducive to producing Shiraz in particular. As usual, this is an absolute steal, a daily drinking Shiraz oozing quality and appeal. Who doesn't need and ripping sub $15 Shiraz on hand?
What it Tastes Like
"Mike Press Shiraz routinely slays them dead in the value – and therefore quality – department. This release is another good one, if not one of the estate’s best. It’s an honest red with some cool climates highlights. Indeed it almost tastes cabernet-esque, with blackcurrant driving through rich plum, and a sprinkling of herbs and tobacco-like notes as a counterbalance to the creaminess of oak. Acidity is a little jangly this year but then you get the sense that this wine is still coming together. Certainly at the price there’s no reason to hesitate." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
92 points. "2015 was a great season for the Adelaide Hills, and this wine captures the black fruit depth of now 19-year-old shiraz vines, within the elegant mould and refreshing acid balance of this high vineyard, a rousing celebration of all the pepper and spice of Adelaide Hills shiraz. As always, oak pokes out a little at this young age, and it appreciates a vigorous decant or - better - some years in the cellar." - Tyson Stelzer (Tyson Stelzer's Australian and New Zealand Wines of the Year 2017) 89+ points "Mike Press Shiraz routinely slays them dead in the value – and therefore quality – department. About the Producer
With nearly half a century worth of experience in the Australian wine industry under his belt, Mike Press’ wines are right at the head of the pack of Australia’s best value wines. Mike produces stylish and flavour-packed wines from classic Adelaide Hills varieties like Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and rarely misses a beat. One of the absolute bargain producers in all of Australia.
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
