Spinifex’s white wines rarely receive the same fanfare as their reds, but this little Vermentino - a new addition to the high value ‘Miette’ range - is delicious.
Winemaker Peter Schell often uses Vermentino in his better known white blend ‘Lola’ where its structure and natural acid makes it an important blending component. As a stand alone variety though, Vermentino has been gathering steam and works well as a fresh, fruit-forward alternative to Sauvignon Blanc.
This is a lovely example. It comes from a small vineyard in the far north of the Barossa, where it’s able to ripen late and build nice ripe flavour whilst maintaining its freshness. It’s fermented in a mixture of stainless steel and old large format oak, before spending 7 months on its lees to build in more texture.
Interest and drinkability at a great price point, and yet another feather in the Spinifex cap.
What It Tastes Like
Delicate aromas of citrus, herbs, nuts and bath salts. The palate has nice weight and breadth to it, with flavours of lemons and apples and mineral hints. Well integrated acid helps balance things. Simple but interesting and very pleasant!
Sourced from a 1 acre vineyard growing in hard, ironstone rich ground in one of the highest parts of Koonunga Hill in the extreme north of the Barossa Valley. An innately rugged and hardy cultivar, Vermentino ripens relatively slowly, retaining acid and freshness, allowing it to be harvested towards the end of the harvest period with delicate flavour, generous texture and natural freshness.
Fruit is allowed to fruit macerate for 4-8 hours after crushing without destemming. Lightly clarified juice is transferred after 18 hrs of settling to both stainless steel and old 500 L puncheons to ferment on its own accord. The young wine is lightly sulphured after alcoholic fermentation, to block malo-lactic from occurring, and sits on full lees for 7 months prior to racking, and bottled without filtration.
