The Massena lads, Dan and Jaysen first conceived this wine back in 1999 whilst driving between the Barossa and Clare in the dead of night during the gruelling time of year that is vintage - it’s become a staple of their range ever since.
These two know Barossa wines as well as any in the biz, and this, their Rhone inspired blend of 47% Mataro, 38% Grenache, 12% Shiraz and 3% Cinsaut, is a prime example of their skills.
The 2015 was rated 93 points from The Wine Front’s Campbell Mattinson who said it “Hits the nail pretty much bang on.” These Rhone Valley inspired blends are kicking huge goals in the Barossa at the moment, and this is pitch perfect in terms of style.

Grape Variety: 47% Mataro, 38% Grenache, 12% Shiraz, 3% Cinsault
The 2015 vintage again finds itself based around fruit from our Dadds block Mataro, which has proved to be one of the most intriguing and consistent dry grown vineyards. A handful of whole cluster Cinsault was co-fermented with the Mataro to soften the sharper tannins. Old bush vine Grenache from the Barossa foothills was sourced to add lifted spice and bright fruit and provide multiple blending options. Some tank and barrel ageing was adopted across this blend, with each parcel and barrel selected based on adding as much interest as possible.

Part of the elite group of wineries in the ‘Artisans of the Barossa’ cellar door, Dan Standish and Jaysen Collins’ label Massena is a force to be reckoned with. After leaving their respective jobs at industry big dogs Torbreck and Turkey Flat they started their own brand in 2000 to produce wines that are in their own words “true to the Barossa style, being rich, warm and generous.”

Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
