Mac Forbes believes the Yarra Valley's best wine is, in fact, the Cabernet blend , rather than Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. He's been inspired by the likes of Mount Mary where he worked for many years, and this blend, named after Mac's father Hugh, is every bit the _highly fragrant, medium-bodied and elegant style_ of Bordeaux blend the region is famous for. The 2015 season in the Yarra Valley was a cracking vintage and has resulted in one of Mac's best releases of the wine to date. A new vineyard for Mac this year, Yarra Glen rather than the Gruyere vineyard for previous releases. This site offering perhaps a little more 'flesh' on release than previous versions of Hugh. If you like your Cabernet blends richly fruited and full-bodied, best to look elsewhere, but for lovers of a more subtle and elegant style, this is simply stunning. Only made in tiny quantities and just a pleasure to drink.
What it Tastes Like
Floral top notes, lovely perfume of violet red and black currant, bayleaf, dried cranberry. Very gentle mouthfeel with great interplay of medium-bodied fruit and finely grained tannin. Tucked in nicely, strides long and elegant with balance aplenty. Effortless Cabernet blend. Ideal for the cellar.
This Bordeaux blend is from Yarra Glen on a similarly aged block to that of the Gruyere site. Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and is complimented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.
Bottle Size: 750ml
Drink Until: 2035
About the Producer
If you love premium and artisanal Australian wine, Mac Forbes is a name you need to know. He’s not only one of the country’s most talented young winemakers, but he’s an influential spokesman for the concept of ‘terroir’, believing that wine should represent a time and a place.
Mac specialises in single vineyard Pinot Noir from the Yarra Valley. His wines are delicate and finely etched, characterised by subtlety and grace. His Chardonnays are loved by those who look for fruit purity rather than winemaking artifice in the variety, his array of off-dry Rieslings from the Strathboogie Ranges are some of the country’s most unique. And his ever-expanding range of experimental wines are a treasure-trove for the curious drinker.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the truly Nobel grapes. An inherently structural variety, Cabernet when handled gently can produce majestic wines of grace and beauty that mature gloriously with time in the bottle. Australian Cabernet runs the full gamut of style: from lighter, more finely boned versions from regions such as the Yarra Valley, through the exquisitely complex and firm wines of Margaret River to the intensely powerful wines from the Coonawarra, there is much to explore in the world of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon.
