The EB wines are Mac's playground. It's where he gets to try new things out - different winemaking techniques, new varieties, no limitations with these wines, just have some fun. This is the Mac Forbes team's first crack at Chenin Blanc and it's a ripper. Mac doesn't do things by halves. This is premium fruit from his Wesburn vineyard, one of the finest in the suite of vineyards under viticultural management by this team. It's treated carefully: some old oak, natural ferment, bottled with only a little SO2 to keep it stable. As with everything in this the Mac Forbes portfolio, this is about letting the vineyard speak. Premium Chenin Blanc by one of the Yarra Valley's finest. Nice work, Mac!
What it Tastes Like
A little funk and reductive character followed by white stone fruit, and a nip of citrus. The palate has weight and chew, with a glossy, slippery mouthfeel. Pretty powerful Chenin here. Not messing around. Amazing first run at the variety. Top notch.
Wesburn was unloved until a few years ago. Planted in 1981, this vineyard, in the far eastern reaches of the Yarra (just before Warburton), sits in the fringe of what many consider marginal viticultural land. It is these sites that truly inspire us and have the potential to make our most exciting wines. The site sits on our beloved siltstone clay soils at the foot of Mount Bride (1000m) which offers cooler nights and mornings. The resultant extension of the ripening period expresses itself by way of far greater tannin depth, high notes and fruit weight. Sometimes walking the fine line reaps rewards.
