- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
As Campbell Mattinson observed in his review of this wine, "Moppity just keeps knocking out the hits." They have been one of the most successful wineries on the Australian wine show circuit for the last few years and with releases like this Lock & Key Reserve Tempranillo, it's not hard to see why. This comes from the Hilltops region and a cracking vintage in 2015. It's a great example of modern Aussie Temp - medium bodied, amply fruited with great savoury undertones. On the wine, Mattinson says simply, "Yes. It’s bang on... Price makes it a steal." and awarded it 94 points. If you are loving Tempranillo, this is one of the best bang-for-your-buck examples around.
What it Tastes Like
"Yes. It’s bang on. Sturdy and yet loaded with fruit. Indeed awash with fruit-drenched favour, the veneer of musky/creamy/vanillin oak keeping the spunk factor high. Cherry plum, herbs, and loads of ropey tannin. Price makes it a steal." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
95 points. "Everything about this wine is as it should be: bright crimson-purple hue, a forthright bouquet traversing berries small and large, flavours from red (cherry) to black (blackcurrant) all with a seductive juicy character to the long, medium-bodied palate, the farewell bringing echoes of spice and licorice into play." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion) 94 points. "Moppity just keeps knocking out the hits. This is a tempranillo from Hilltops. Yes.
A stunning, modern Australian take on a Spanish classic. This Tempranillo is packed with soft, juicy, jubey fruit flavour but the lingering savoury notes provide complexity and give away its old-world heritage. This variety is a great fit for the Hilltops cool to moderate climate and we believe it has a huge future here. Look out, Shiraz!

About the Producer
In less than 5 years Moppity have captured the wine trade’s imagination with their wonderfully balanced, concentrated and expressive cool climate wines. Take note, this winery are one of the rising stars if Australian wine.
This is one to watch. The Hilltops in NSW has some huge potential. The high altitude vineyards in this region are producing some of the most epic cool climate Syrah/Shiraz and Cabernet on the market at the moment. With a relatively low profile (for now), the value to be had in this area is second to none. But get in quick, the word is getting out and it wont be that way for long. Love yourself the more refined side of Shiraz? The Hilltops is a place you really need to check out.
Tempranillo is a hot-blooded Spanish variety that has found a happy home in many Australian wine regions. Typically, Tempranillo will be medium bodied, showing silky darker fruits and tannins riddled with exotic spices. The wines are more-ish and incredibly well suited to alfresco Australian dining. Unsurprisingly, Tempranillo is one of the country’s most popular emerging varieties and is set to have a big future on Australian shores.
