- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Alert! Alert! Pinot bargain ahead! Lethbridge to me perfectly symbolises what modern Australian winemaking is all about. Not 100% locked down in one approach or another, but just crafting as naturally made wines as possible that are both delicious and, in owner/winemaker Ray Nadeson's words, "express the unique character of special places"._ Ray is kicking some serious goals with his Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs in particular (although he makes a mean cool climate Shiraz!), and his unique wines have really led the way for many other natural winemakers to follow. 'Menage a Noir' is Ray's 'entry level' Pinot, and as far as Pinot Noir goes it's about as good value as it gets at under 30 bucks. It's made from multiple parcels of fruit from various Geelong sub-regions and is designed to be simultaneously approachable and interesting. That it absolutely is! This is the most user-friendly and fruit forward release of this wine in a number of years and the perfect wine to get familiar with this standout Geelong producer.
What it Tastes Like
Bright cherry and earthen aromas. Some hints of truffle, spring time flowers - youthful exuberance brimming from the glass. More carbonic maceration this year gives it that pretty, fairy flossy, musk sticks and lipstick character which just screams "Drink me NOW". Sessionable and yet interesting - this release is going to make a bunch of friends.

About the Producer
Lethbridge is living proof that those pie-in-the-sky ideas you have with friends over a glass of wine can come true (if you are as talented and hard working as Ray Nadeson, Maree Collis and Adrian Thomas). This operation is considered one of the leading lights in the ‘natural wine’ movement, being founded on the idea that great fruit should speak for itself. The vineyards are grown with an organic philosophy and as little as possible is added to the wines through the winemaking process. The wines have a certain style to them, but most of all, the song of Geelong sings through the whole range. They are fascinating and delicious all at once.
This Victorian region rocks some very serious wines. Pinot Noir from this area, depending on who you talk too, is arguably the best in the country. Phenomenal output for the size of it. The wines from this area are idiosyncratic and have an earthy, sensual quality. Burgundian varieties, Syrah, hell, even Pinot Gris does exceptionally well here. To be honest, it’s very hard to go wrong when buying from Geelong.
No variety captures the hearts and minds of the wine lover quite like Pinot Noir. It’s the unicorn of many a winemaker. Notoriously fickle to grow, this delicate red variety can deliver a kaleidoscope of flavours and aromas, from the bright and floral to the moody and mysterious and everything in between. The cooler regions of Australia are where Pinot Noir is most at home. Look to Tasmania and Victoria for the best examples, with some quality wines beginning to show from the Great Southern and from the cooler parts of NSW. Falling in love with Pinot Noir can be a life long affair, beware the charms of this most enchanting of grapes.
