- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
There is something so distinct about the Lethbridge wines. The combination of Ray Nadeson's natural winemaking and the distinctive terroir of his Geelong vineyards makes Lethbridge one of the true cult favourite wineries of the region. The new release of Ray's Chardonnay is, in his opinion, one of his best to date. And for him, the reason is all to do with site. As he talked us through the new release he explained, _“It’s a lovely vineyard in Geelong planted in the mid 80’s - one of those vineyards planted on a bit of Limestone. The vines have this ‘walking down the beach’ character..." This wine is a powerhouse. With the influx of lean and mean Chardonnay on the market, it is great to see Chardonnay with some serious punch. "We pick it ripe but you don’t see pineapple or tropical fruit - you see terroir. If you’ve got fruit that is this dense, then you need the oak to create the structure and framework." Ray doesn't hold back on this wine, it gets a healthy dose of new oak and goes through full malolactic fermentation but somehow remains tightly wound and composed. For lovers of Australian Chardonnay with complexity and class, this is a must try.
What it Tastes Like
An explosion of funk, vanilla and orange sherbert on the nose. Nuts and nougat, is that Summertime bars that I’m thinking of? Sweet roasted nuts in the palate, honey lemons and peaches. Slippery and slick with a faint chalkiness. There is a slateyness to it, the zip and grip, the chalkiness needed. Still wickedly acidic despite the full malo. Full throttle but under control.
2013 vintage: 95 points. "Hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed to new French puncheons for wild yeast fermentation and mlf, then taken to French oak (30% new) for a further 11 months on lees. An opulent and complex chardonnay with stone fruit, melon and fig in a creamy/toasty matrix, oak evident but integrated and balanced." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
Closure: Screw Cap

About the Producer
Lethbridge is living proof that those pie-in-the-sky ideas you have with friends over a glass of wine can come true (if you are as talented and hard working as Ray Nadeson, Maree Collis and Adrian Thomas). This operation is considered one of the leading lights in the ‘natural wine’ movement, being founded on the idea that great fruit should speak for itself. The vineyards are grown with an organic philosophy and as little as possible is added to the wines through the winemaking process. The wines have a certain style to them, but most of all, the song of Geelong sings through the whole range. They are fascinating and delicious all at once.
This Victorian region rocks some very serious wines. Pinot Noir from this area, depending on who you talk too, is arguably the best in the country. Phenomenal output for the size of it. The wines from this area are idiosyncratic and have an earthy, sensual quality. Burgundian varieties, Syrah, hell, even Pinot Gris does exceptionally well here. To be honest, it’s very hard to go wrong when buying from Geelong.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
