Pinot Nero is the Italian name for Pinot Noir, the name keeping in step with the overall theme of the La Prova series: Australian examples of Italian wines. This offering by Sam Scott, the winemaker behind La Prova is an easy drinking yet characterful version of Pinot from the Adelaide Hills. Scott sources fruit from two vineyards in the Hills to make up this wine, combining the strengths of both sites to make a balanced and complex version of the variety. Campbell Mattinson rated it 92 points complementing its murky character and intrigue. Top value and brilliant drinking in the context of Aussie Pinot.
What it Tastes Like
"Firm, powerful pinot with smoky reductive notes and crackles of leafy spice. Cherried fruit isn’t particularly bright – it’s stewy and ferrous – but it remains lively, in part thanks to a gentle sourness. Complexity is the key. So too the firmness of tannin. So too, I would argue, the wine’s murky, undergrowthy heart." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Broderick Vineyard, Basket Range and Mawson Ridge Vineyard, Forest Range. Adelaide Hills winemaking mythology is that where cherries grow well (cool), so does Pinot Nero (Noir to the Frenchies). I agree, enter Basket Range and Forest Range. These two vineyards are in sub-regions that the old-timers call ‘Stringy country’ where the thin sandy soils grow many Stringybark eucalypt trees. The Broderick Vineyard has some north in its aspect and is a bit warmer, lending some generosity to the wine and Mawson Ridge at 550m elevation is very cool, characteristically earthy and fragrant. Between them there are 5 clones of Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) 114, 115, 777, MV6 and D5V12. Hand picked, some whole bunches, wild ferments. It has succulence and some deeper earthy notes.

About the Producer
Sam Scott has a clear vision for his Scott and La Prova labels - Italian inspired wines done with an Australian sensibility. Utilising his retail, winemaking and viticultural experience, he has crafted a range of interesting, charming wines that always over-deliver in the value-for-money stakes. He is taking the Adelaide Hills by storm and as James Halliday noted, “Scott is a star in the making.”
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
No variety captures the hearts and minds of the wine lover quite like Pinot Noir. It’s the unicorn of many a winemaker. Notoriously fickle to grow, this delicate red variety can deliver a kaleidoscope of flavours and aromas, from the bright and floral to the moody and mysterious and everything in between. The cooler regions of Australia are where Pinot Noir is most at home. Look to Tasmania and Victoria for the best examples, with some quality wines beginning to show from the Great Southern and from the cooler parts of NSW. Falling in love with Pinot Noir can be a life long affair, beware the charms of this most enchanting of grapes.
