- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Nic Peterkin has shown in his young career that he is not afraid to take risks and give anything a go. Some Nebbiolo fruit became available from a cool site at the Southern End of Margaret River in 2015. He jumped in feet first. "There are things I love about Nebbiolo," he told us, "And things I don't. I want the tannins not to be harsh and I want plenty of fruit. It should be drinkable from a young age, and I think that's what the 2015 is like." Three of the five barrels that he made contained fruit on skins for a massive 400 days. A logistical nightmare according to Nic but the results were worth it. It's a beautiful wine. Something uniquely Australian but also staying true to the hallmarks of the variety. There is no 2016 or 2017 vintage. There were only 1000 bottles made in 2015 and it's almost sold out. Do not hesitate if you are a Nebbiolo fan.
What it Tastes Like
Rosy perfume, cherries baking on bitumen, rust and earth and tobacco all set amongst the smells of the Aussie bush. It's so very Nebbiolo but with Margaret River strung throughout its DNA. It corkscrews through the mouth. Sour red cherries rush with a maelstrom of acidity and tannin. The tannins are soft but present. It’s varietal. It’s Australian and it doesn’t shy away from that. It’s a fascinating wine from beginning to end.
96 points "A beautiful package and a floral, svelte, sleek and incredibly attractive wine to boot. This is quite possibly the most perfumed Australian nebbiolo yet tasted. The wine is clearly gently extracted. Whole berries were gently plunged into open fermenters, before half of the cuve spent 400 days on skins. The result echoes a top flight Cru Beaujolais with an emphasis on red cherry, strawberry, rosewater and floral perfumes, rather than structural grit. This said, some sandalwood washes across the mid-palate, while nebbiolo's genetic stamp of high-toned acidity and fibrous tannins - toned down and almost gossamer, for the style at hand - imbue freshness to a growing sweetness in the glass." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
Vineyard is located in the far south of Margaret River. Cool site with dry grown 35-year-old vines on a north facing slope. Fruit was perfect in terms of numbers so no adjustment necessary. Two tonnes hand picked. Whole berries fermented at cool temperatures - 21-22 degrees at most. Sent to old oak on skins for 400 days. 3 barrels with skins, 2 without. 5 barrels made - 1000 bottles filled. Was bottled in June 2016.

About the Producer
Nic Peterkin’s blood runs red with Margaret River wine. The son of Pierro founder, Dr Mike Peterkin and Shelly Cullen, of you guessed it, Cullen wines fame, the force is strong with this one. His wines are out there, challenging the status quo of one of the country’s most respected wine producing regions. This is the “New Guard” of Margaret River, and the wines are coming out all guns blazing.
Nic is playing with some varieties off the beaten path of classic Margaret River. Nebbiolo, Touriga Nacional and Sousao, all finding a home amongst his eye-catching range. There’s some serious substance to his project, being named as the 2016 Gourmet Traveller Young Winemaker of the Year for his eclectic and tantalising releases.
Margaret River is recognised as one of the country’s finest wine growing regions. The quality of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rival the very best in the world. But Margaret River is no two-trick-pony. There, Tempranillo and Malbec are excelling, Touriga Nacional seems to be quite at home, Chenin Blanc is getting serious and even pockets of Nebbiolo are rearing their heads. Watch this space. Who knows what new surprises are just around the corner from this famous region.
Nebbiolo is one of the world’s truly great wine grapes. Most famously produced in the Italian regions of Barolo and Barbaresco, this king-pin of varieties is making a surge on Australian soil. A notoriously late ripening variety, Australian producers are constantly refining the way they grow this grape. Nebbiolo wines are light to medium bodied with incredible internal power and structure. These wines can live for decades when grown on the right sites. The classic descriptors of ‘tar & roses’ are often applied to this variety but the scope for complexity and nuance in the best versions is virtually limitless. The life of a great Nebbiolo as it matures through the years is one of the great wonders in all of wine.
