About The Wine
McLaren Vale ‘GSM’ blends work so very well, and this wine is a modern, joyous celebration of the style.
It comes from Jericho - another hugely exciting emerging producer who very obviously know exactly what they’re doing. The fruit comes from 40-year-old, unirrigated bush vines in the Blewitt Springs area - a sub-region that is home to many of the Vale’s finest and most perfumed Grenache.
Owner and winemaker Neil Jericho explained to us that while the Shiraz (10%) and Mataro (3%) components definitely add something to this wine, the hero is Grenache (87%). Juicy, jubey, delicious Grenache!

What It Tastes Like

It smells and tastes great. There’s no need to coax it forward; it leaps from the glass, immediately on opening. Aniseed, blackberry tubes, fresh leather, a garnish of herbs. Fruit tannin abounds. It’s fresh and lively but there’s no want of flavour. You’d jump at this every time. In buying terms this is no-brainer territory.”

WINEMAKERS NOTES The focus of this wine is the Grenache with the other varieties adding structure and complexity to the overall blend. Grenache, 77%, had partial whole bunch fermentation and aged in older french oak barrels. Whole bunch fermentation gives the wine its vibrant red berry characteristics. Careful use of Shiraz adds structure to the wine and the Mourvedre adds spiciness. Grenache is one of the traditional varieties of McLaren Vale so it is with great pride that we now add this blend to the Jericho portfolio.
VINEYARD The Grenache fruit comes from two very old McLaren Vale vineyards that are 85 and 40 year old vines. The vines are old bush vines and have never been irrigated in their time. This produces intensity in the Grenache portion of the wine. Shiraz and the Mourvedre fruit are typical McLaren Vale, strong and fruit driven.
TASTING NOTES Grenache (77%) together with the whole bunch fermentation adds the focus of this blend. The fruit character of Grenache is red berry type fruit and softness on the palate. Grenache produces very elegant wines but with a great power of fruit. Shiraz (15%) adds structure and complexity and Mourvedre (8%) adds spice and gamey characteristics. We were very careful that neither the Shiraz nor Mourvedre were to dominate the blend but to add subtle complexity to the Grenache.
FOOD PAIRING This wine is a great food wine and is perfectly paired to a wide range of foods. From pizza, pasta and tapas through to stronger flavoured dishes, BBQ meats and game.
CELLARING: Best to drink young while the flavours are fresh and juicy. 3-5 years.

Family owned and run with experienced winemaker Neil Jericho at the helm, they source both traditional and alternative varieties from various vineyards around McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills.
