- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Gary Mills' Jamsheed Pyren Syrah is one of his most sought-after wines. It comes from the 'Pyren Vineyard' in the town of Warrenmang in the Pyrenees region of Victoria, where the quartz laced pink granitic soils add what Gary describes "all sorts of pink flavours" to the finished wine. As with all of Gary's Syrahs, it is made with whole bunches (100%), indigenous yeasts, older French oak, unfined and unfiltered and aside from a touch of sulphur before bottling has no additions whatsoever. The 2015 vintage shows great depth of fruit with the classic Jamsheed lift and vitality. Once again the Pyren is leading the charge as one of the best Jamsheed Syrah releases. Syrah lovers, rejoice!
What it Tastes Like
Soft macerated plums in their sauce, lush and svelt but crisp-edged. It transitions from sweet dark forrest fruits to herb-crusted meat and green and pink peppercorn to close. Ripe tannins carry the fruit with sturdy footing. It's wild but with inward concentration. X-factor. Gary Mills' paw prints all over it. Fine wine in natural form.
The Pyren Syrah is sourced from vines planted on the quartz laced pink granitic soils of the Pyren vineyard in the township of Warrenmang in the Pyrenees region of Victoria. 100% whole bunch fermentation, 40 day extended maceration, indigenous yeast, racked to one and two year old French puncheons, sur lees for 15 months, gravity racked and bottled unfined and unfiltered. No acid, enzymes or additives other than a small amount of sulphur dioxide was used in production. Alc/vol 14.2%

About the Producer
Gary Mills is a rockstar of Victorian wine. His Jamsheed wines are amongst the most exciting in the country: thrilling, authentic wines packed with personality. Campbell Mattinson labelled him “a leading producer”, Jamie Good called him “the new face of Australian wine” and Matthew Jukes went as far as to call the wine of Jamsheed “a revelation”. With a specific focus on the regional differences in Victorian Syrah for his Jamsheed range, Gary has been one of the loudest advocates for the inclusion of whole bunch ferments and was ahead of the curve in creating minimal intervention wines that naturally convey the characteristics of their respective vineyards. Wild, electric and a little left of centre, Jamsheed is one of the Victoria’s most compelling producers.
The Pyrenees is renowned for its wines of presence and grace. Whether it is Syrah, Cabernet or Nebbiolo, the cool slopes of the Pyrenees consistently produce some of Victoria’s most remarkable wines. Classically, the wines are loaded with power and spice, with loads of flavour and great cellaring potential. One of the gems of Victoria wine.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
