- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Syrah is what Gary Mills does best, and this is the ultimate wine with which to get acquainted with his style. As Jamie Goode mentioned, “The less expensive Harem series deliver pure vinous pleasure”. Pure vinous pleasure sounds good to me!
It’s made of a blend of Pyrenees Shiraz and Yarra Valley Shiraz fruit, and just like his premium single vineyard Syrahs it sees a fair whack of whole bunches (100% this year for 18 days), giving it that trademark earthy, spicy character. It also receives a small amount of newer oak which adds to its approachability.
This is probably the most ‘serious’ La Syrah made to date, further stamping its incredible value.
What It Tastes Like
The nose is lively, with bouncy red and black fruits, earthy notes and garen herbs. The palate is tightly wound and mei-weight, with blackberries, plums and cherries battling for supremacy with soft creamy oak, fine tannins and refreshing acidity. It’s playful, it’s thought-provoking, but most of all it’s just wonderfully balanced. Great buying at the price.

About the Producer
Gary Mills is a rockstar of Victorian wine. His Jamsheed wines are amongst the most exciting in the country: thrilling, authentic wines packed with personality. Campbell Mattinson labelled him “a leading producer”, Jamie Good called him “the new face of Australian wine” and Matthew Jukes went as far as to call the wine of Jamsheed “a revelation”. With a specific focus on the regional differences in Victorian Syrah for his Jamsheed range, Gary has been one of the loudest advocates for the inclusion of whole bunch ferments and was ahead of the curve in creating minimal intervention wines that naturally convey the characteristics of their respective vineyards. Wild, electric and a little left of centre, Jamsheed is one of the Victoria’s most compelling producers.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
