The Hutton wines are made by Michael Hutton, Margaret River born and raised architect-turned-garagiste winemaker.
This is his barrel fermented Semillon from Wilyabrup, circa 2015. Lees stirring and the prevention of MLF giving this wine excellent length and sizzling acidity with a cloak of texture for early approachability.
It’s excellent value from this premium wine region. The 2015 receiving 94 points from Gary Walsh, and with only 70 dozen made, it won’t be around for long.
What It Tastes Like
“I really like these Semillons from Hutton. 70 cases made. Lime, a little cut fennel and snow pea, gentle vanilla perfume. It’s bright and fresh, with a sort of lime spider flavour and creaminess, a little green herb to lend interest, crisp and pure acidity, and a long fresh finish. Delightful. Love this.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Fruit for the 2015 Hutton Triptych Margaret River Semillon was sourced from the Kailis vineyard in Wilyabrup. The grapes were hand picked in February, chilled overnight, then crushed and gently pressed. The free run juice was fermented naturally with wild yeasts in French barriques. No malolactic fermentation was encouraged to preserve the bright, natural acidity. The wine was matured for 8 months in barrel with regular battonage. Bottling was in December and 70 cases were produced.

Margaret River is recognised as one of the country’s finest wine growing regions. The quality of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rival the very best in the world. But Margaret River is no two-trick-pony. There, Tempranillo and Malbec are excelling, Touriga Nacional seems to be quite at home, Chenin Blanc is getting serious and even pockets of Nebbiolo are rearing their heads. Watch this space. Who knows what new surprises are just around the corner from this famous region.
