This is fantastic value for the lover of premium Margaret River Chardonnay.
The 2015 Hutton Triptych Chardonnay combines elegance with the characteristic regional power of Margaret River. This is fruit from the Wildberry vineyard in Wilyabrup, fermented and aged in 50% new oak and stirred regularly to build texture without the help of malo. This retains immaculate freshness whlist still having the gravitas you want in a top-flight Chardonnay from this part of the world.
Gary Walsh sumed it up beautifully with his note, “Light, but beautiful to drink.” in his 95 point review of the 2015. There are few Chardonnays as classy as this sub $50 in this region. With less than 100 dozen made, get it while you can.
What It Tastes Like
“Flavour and finesse here. Slides through the mouth, bright fresh fruit, but silky and glossy too. Lime, white peach, almonds and wheat germ, slight herbal punch, and well integrated spicy oak. Crunch and verve. Superb long finish. Light, but beautiful to drink.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Fruit for the 2015 Hutton Triptych Margaret River Chardonnay was sourced from the Wildberry Springs vineyard in Wilyabrup. The Mendoza clone grapes were hand picked in February, chilled overnight, then crushed and gently pressed. The free run juice and pressings were fermented naturally with wild yeasts in French barriques (50% new). No malolactic fermentation was encouraged to preserve the bright, natural acidity. The wine was matured for 8 months in barrel with regular battonage. Bottling was in December and 95 cases were produced.

Margaret River is recognised as one of the country’s finest wine growing regions. The quality of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rival the very best in the world. But Margaret River is no two-trick-pony. There, Tempranillo and Malbec are excelling, Touriga Nacional seems to be quite at home, Chenin Blanc is getting serious and even pockets of Nebbiolo are rearing their heads. Watch this space. Who knows what new surprises are just around the corner from this famous region.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
