- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Hearts of Oak winemaker, Jacob Allen, has a very simple mission, "... to make the best example of Australian chenin possible." He's making a very good fist at it by sourcing some of the best Chenin Blanc fruit in WA. This wine comes from the same vineyard as Jo Perry's Dormilona Chenin Blanc, a biodynamically farmed vineyard in Willyabrup, Margaret River. The winemaking is inspired by the wines of Vouvray, the fruit is pressed straight to old French oak, with the lees regularly stirred throughout to build in layers of texture and interest. The 2016 is another of the fine examples of Chenin coming out of this region, and one that will thrill lovers of this often over-looked variety.
What it Tastes Like
Complex aromas of beez wax, smoke, soft white peaches and a little hint of vanilla. It's toasty and warm, round in body, and full flavoured. A thread of fine acidity weaves through the fruit giving lift and freshness to the mouth filling fruit. One for Chenin enthusiasts.
2015 HEARTS OF OAK CHENIN BLANC I’ve always had a love of Vouvray. The Chenin Blanc grape I think is highly under valued. I wanted to also give it the respect it deserves. Picked early to retain good natural acidity offsetting a lick of sweetness. Barrel fermented in old French oak for mouth feel and lees stirring to add more texture. The label depicts David Garrick playing Benedict in Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. David Garrick for whom Garrick’s Wine was named is a significant figure in the history of theatre. He championed respect for the acting profession, brought Shakespeare back into vogue and introduced a new style of acting that was naturalistic rather than the then popular melodramatic style. When he first moved to London from Hereford he began his working life as a Wine Merchant with his brother. ‘Heart of Oak’ is a poem that David Garrick wrote. It was set to music and is the official march of the Royal Navy. The back label is a copy of a playbill of one of Garrick’s plays that was performed at Drury Lane in London. Enjoy this wine with friends and may it inspire you to convey stories as David Garrick did. Cheers, Jacob Allan

Margaret River is recognised as one of the country’s finest wine growing regions. The quality of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rival the very best in the world. But Margaret River is no two-trick-pony. There, Tempranillo and Malbec are excelling, Touriga Nacional seems to be quite at home, Chenin Blanc is getting serious and even pockets of Nebbiolo are rearing their heads. Watch this space. Who knows what new surprises are just around the corner from this famous region.
