- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Contrarian Shiraz is a chance for Alex Head to spread his wings and explore his home region.
“I have a particular fondness and affinity for this wine and what it represents moving forward in the Barossa. It fulfills my desire to push wine-making boundaries and explore the unique Terroirs of the Barossa (A single vineyard wine but from a different site each year).” - Alex Head
The 2015 is from a single site in Krondorf. It’s one of the best releases of this wine to date. Offering excellent value for both the intermediate and serious collector, The Contrarian can be enjoyed now or in a decade plus.
Gary Walsh descibed it as a, “Savoury and lithe expression of Barossa Shiraz, and very nicely done too.” in his 94 point review. Top buying here for any Barossa Shiraz fan.
What It Tastes Like
“Has perfume and spice laid on thick, and also this kind of ferrous thing going on that’s quite intriguing. Bramble fruit, grilled meat, very subtle cinnamon oak, medium bodied, lively and slightly sappy, fine emery tannin, with plenty of spice on a long cool finish. Savoury and lithe expression of Barossa Shiraz, and very nicely done too.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

About the Producer
Alex Head has had what you might call a meteoric rise through the Australian wine industry. In his short career as a producer he has been heralded as one of the best Young Gun Winemakers, not only in the Barossa but the whole country. With no formal training as a winemaker, the purity and balance inherent in the wines are amazing.
Alex has a passion for the old vineyards that populate the Barossa. With a keen eye for a good site, Alex has put together a formidable portfolio of vineyards which produce simply outstanding renditions of Shiraz and Grenache year-in, year-out.
The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. Now, with a new generation of winemakers reinventing the region, there’s more than just power in the Barossa’s bag of tricks. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
