- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The The Blonde has become something of a Barossa Valley staple for those seeking the next wave of premium Barossa Shiraz for their cellar.
The Blonde is made as a sort of tip-of-the-cap to the famed wines of Côte-Rôtie, often blended with a tiny amount of Viognier (2%-5%) - this is the brighter and more elegant version of Barossa Shiraz than many on the market today.
The 2015 is a sensational release, the season naturally producing more aromatic and finely boned wines in general for the region, characteristics that suit The Blonde perfectly.
Gary Walsh awarded this 95 points suggesting that this release reminded him, “of how Rockford Basket Press used to taste.” A classic release of this much loved Shiraz from Alex.
What It Tastes Like
“This, for me at least, is textbook Barossa Shiraz. It’s perfumed and rosy, smooth with milk chocolate, raspberry and plum, light spicy oak framing the fruit beautifully. Medium bodied, silky and fine, melts on the palate and lays the charm on thick throughout. Turkish delight and gossamer fine tannin trails on a long fresh finish. Delightful.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

95 points “Deep crimson-vermilion-purple colour segues to scents of rose water, milk chocolate and ground pepper. A classy wine of cascading sweet fruit flavours and a myriad of spices, 33% new French oak is impeccably integrated; the fine, papery tannins polished and the acidity marked and racy, an imprint of the limestone substrata over which the vineyard is planted.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
This single vineyard lies in the Stone Well parish and has a myriad of soil types including red-clays and grey sands (Blonde in colour) running the length of the vineyard. It always show perfume and jube-like blue fruits, crops naturally at around 1.5 tonne to the acre and produces riper, plumper, sweeter fruited wines while still retaining acidity due to the higher limestone content of the soil.

About the Producer
Alex Head has had what you might call a meteoric rise through the Australian wine industry. In his short career as a producer he has been heralded as one of the best Young Gun Winemakers, not only in the Barossa but the whole country. With no formal training as a winemaker, the purity and balance inherent in the wines are amazing.
Alex has a passion for the old vineyards that populate the Barossa. With a keen eye for a good site, Alex has put together a formidable portfolio of vineyards which produce simply outstanding renditions of Shiraz and Grenache year-in, year-out.
The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. Now, with a new generation of winemakers reinventing the region, there’s more than just power in the Barossa’s bag of tricks. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
