The Head Red Shiraz is considered the trailer or preview to each vintage of the Head premium single vineyard Shiraz’.
This is made from the barrels that barely missed the cut on the SV Shiraz’; The Blonde; The Brunette and The Contrarian. Made with all the love and care that go into his top-flight releases, Alex Head releases this as a younger wine and often it acts as a harbinger for the quality of the vintage.
By the looks of this wine, the ‘15 Head releases are going to be sensational. As Gary Walsh noted this release shows, “Unusual sophistication at this price point for a Barossa Shiraz.” in his 92 point review and for delicious, easy drinking but serious Barossa Shiraz, it’s hard to go past this release.
What It Tastes Like
“Unusual sophistication at this price point for a Barossa Shiraz. It’s not an ooze monster, not at all. It’s fine and spicy, almost bony in structure with firm grainy tannin, blueberry and floral/apricot perfume, pan juices and crisp cut of acidity. Finish is dry, meaty and spicy, with a vapour trail of sweet blue fruit. Likely better again with another year in bottle.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
95 points. “The back label puts it succinctly: ‘this is the best value blend of Barossa Valley shiraz I can make each year’. The bouquet is super-fragrant, the medium-bodied palate vibrant and fresh, the flavours circling red and black fruits, multi-spices, a touch of black licorice, and the tannins judged to perfection.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
92 points. “A barrel cull of the all the Shiraz that does not make it into the other wines, though that sells it short.

HEAD RED is a barrel cull from Barossa vineyards including ‘The Blonde’, ‘The Brunette’ and ‘The Contrarian’ single vineyard wines. It allows a pre-view of the vintage quality to come and keeps the quality of the Single vineyard wines as high as possible. The wine always receives 12 months barrel age in predominantly older French hogsheads allowing the vintage and terroir to show clearly. It’s also a chance for me to play with the old adage, ‘The whole is greater than the sum of its parts’. Certainly the best value and most traditional wine style of the portfolio. Bottled unfined and unfiltered under stelvin capsule.
2014 HEAD RED Shiraz, Barossa Valley Another exceptional year for Shiraz in the Barossa, the 2014 HEAD RED Shiraz includes 10 separate vineyard parcels in the final blend including these sites: Stone Well, Marananga, Greenock, Light Pass, Vine Vale and Lyndoch. Included in the blend is a small amount of Grenache, Mataro and Cabernet Sauvignon from Greenock for complexity. Matured for one year in 20% New Oak Foudre and the balance in old French 300L Hogsheads. Bottled unfined and unfiltered under stelvin capsule.
Deep red core to purple rim. Medium to full bodied palate with juicy red and black fruits, spice, plums, black cherry and pepper. Dense chewy tannins finish long and vibrant. Drink now until 2022.
Closure: Screw Cap
Bottle Size: 750ml
About the Producer
Alex Head has had what you might call a meteoric rise through the Australian wine industry. In his short career as a producer he has been heralded as one of the best Young Gun Winemakers, not only in the Barossa but the whole country. With no formal training as a winemaker, the purity and balance inherent in the wines are amazing.
Alex has a passion for the old vineyards that populate the Barossa. With a keen eye for a good site, Alex has put together a formidable portfolio of vineyards which produce simply outstanding renditions of Shiraz and Grenache year-in, year-out.
The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. Now, with a new generation of winemakers reinventing the region, there’s more than just power in the Barossa’s bag of tricks. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
