Here’s a Nero d’Avola with some grunt.
Known mainly as a fun and juicy day-time red, Nero sometimes lacks the architecture to take it to the next level. This version by Raymon Costanzo at Golden Grove has some serious backbone.
The fruit comes from the famous Chalmers vineyard in Heathcote. Usually, the Golden Grove Nero is home grown, but hail damage did away with their 2015 crop. Luckily the Chalmers’ had some extra to go around.
They’ve nailed the style, which they see as a modern take on a classic Sicilian variety - a wine that honours their Italian heritage and also represents a new face of Australian wine.
What It Tastes Like
Chocolate, coco, black fruit and black cherry pie. Gee this is good drinking. Nice gritty tannin frames the vibrant cherry and licorice fruit. Still fresh and alive but with some nice detail etched in. Great stuff and ripping value.

Originating from Sicily, This variety reflects the hard working heritage of our family. The 2015 Nero D’Avola has an abundant nose of ripe cherries, raspberries and red forest fruits with an underlying hint of sweet oak. The palate is soft and succulent with bursts of perfumed ripe sweet fruit all in perfect harmony with the fine grain French oak, and plush tannins. A modern rendition of a Sicilian classic that is good to go now or tuck away for the next five years. Due to devastating hail on Christmas Eve 2014, grapes for this wine were sourced from Chalmers Heathcote vineyard.
