- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
If you love your cool climate Shiraz, then we have a winner for you here.
Under the guidance of winemaking wizard Steve Flamsteed and with access to many of the Yarra Valley’s finest vineyards, the Giant Steps juggernaut is becoming an unstoppable force. The suite of 2015 Pinots and Chardonnays were spectacular, but this wonderful 2015 Syrah is right up there with them.
The fruit is hand-picked from the Tarraford, Sexton and Lonestar Creek vineyards. As with everything Flamsteed puts his name to the treatment in the winery is very gentle and unobtrusive, with wild yeasts, open fermenters and older large format oak use.
The resulting wine is a beauty. Pure and precise, detailed and complex, perfectly pitched.
In his 95 point review Campbell Mattinson called it “a belter” and a “must buy”, and it’s hard to argue. If cool climate, Rhone-inspired Syrah is your thing then there is joy to be had here.
What It Tastes Like
“Cherry plum, crushed dry leaves, the most blessed slow-crash of tannin, herbage and black pepper, all carried along on a river of silk. Eucalypt and clove characters play side roles. The sleeves of this wine are folded immaculately. It’s neat, tidy, contained. But it’s pure and beautiful; it sits in the glass with its heart wide open.” - Campbell Mattinson
95 points. “You like Yarra Valley shiraz? Here’s a belter. It is a ‘must buy’ if this is your thing.
Look what we have here. A Yarra Valley syrah grown on the Sexton and Tarraford vineyards. 40% whole bunches. Open fermented. Matured in 500 litre puncheons. From a fabulous vintage and at the hand of Steve Flamstead, one of Australia’s best winemakers. It has all the right credentials and yet it tastes even better than it sounds. It is just the ticket. Cherry plum, crushed dry leaves, the most blessed slow-crash of tannin, herbage and black pepper, all carried along on a river of silk. Eucalypt and clove characters play side roles. The sleeves of this wine are folded immaculately. It’s neat, tidy, contained. But it’s pure and beautiful; it sits in the glass with its heart wide open.”

About the Producer
Giant Steps is a premium Yarra Valley outfit founded by Phil Sexton located in the in the township of Healesville. Since appointing Steve Flamsteed as his head winemaker and eventual business partner, Sexton and Flamsteed have developed a reputation for producing some of the region’s finest examples of single vineyard wines.
From the vineyard to the final bottled wine, every aspect of the Giant Steps process is geared towards making truly world-class wines. The focus is on what the Yarra does best - Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz/Syrah and Bordeaux-variety blends - and showcasing the unique terroirs of some of the region’s finest vineyards.
For three years running, Wine and Spirit Magazine have named them as one of the Top 100 wineries in the world, and winemaker Steve Flamsteed capped off an amazing run by being named Gourmet Traveller Wine’s 2016 Winemaker of the Year, another jewel in the Giant Steps crown. Their ultra modern cellar door is one of the must-visit experiences for any wine tourist stopping through the Yarra Valley.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
