- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The famed Giaconda Chardonnay is one of the great wines of Australia.
Grown by the iconic Rick Kinzbrunner on the hallowed slopes on the outskirts of Beechworth township, this wine has carved out a unique place for itself in Australian wine.
Notable for its extraordinary power and ageing potential, it has long been held up as a bastion of quality Australian Chardonnay to the rest of the world. It is made in limited amounts and sells out without fail each and every year.
Rick describes the 2015 vintage as “Certainly among the greatest ever Giaconda Chardonnays.” and James Halliday seems to second that opinion in his 98 point review.
If you want to sample what many believe to be Australia’s premier Chardonnay, the 2015 Giaconda Chardonnay is about as good as it gets.
What It Tastes Like
“Pale, bright straw-green; the bouquet is very complex, yet subtle due to emphemeral husky/creamy nuances. The sheer power of the palate is of a category unique to Giaconda (and perhaps Leeuwin Estate), for it is on you before you realise it, the acidity bright and fresh notwithstanding the mlf.” - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
98 points. “Hand-picked, whole bunch-crushed and basket-pressed, fermented in French oak (30% new), 100% mlf, matured for 22 months, not filtered. Pale, bright straw-green; the bouquet is very complex, yet subtle due to emphemeral husky/creamy nuances. The sheer power of the palate is of a category unique to Giaconda (and perhaps Leeuwin Estate), for it is on you before you realise it, the acidity bright and fresh notwithstanding the mlf.”

There are two reasons you can struggle to write a tasting note. Sometimes you just can’t find anything to say. Then there are times when words cannot do justice to what it is you are describing. A failing of the writer, not the wine. This wine is definitely the later scenario. For some, the 2010 Chardonnay reached a summit that Rick had long been climbing. He’s found a new mountain, higher than the last, and successfully climbed that also. Finesse with bright acidity; complex notes of hazelnut, funky, matchstick, tightly wound stone fruit and intense mineral notes push the wine to an extraordinary length on the palate. Certainly among the greatest ever Giaconda Chardonnays. Simply jaw dropping, the tensile length on the palate is a reflection of superb vintage conditions. Destined to live for a long time!

About the Producer
Giaconda is one of Australia’s true ‘cult’ producers, with a following of thousands of wine tragics enchanted by owner/winemaker Rick Kinzbrunner’s wonderful Beechworth wines. Whether Chardonnay, Shiraz or Nebbiolo, all of Giaconda’s wines are made with a fine touch to preserve what is remarkably high-quality fruit. Production is extremely limited and the wines generally sell out upon release. A special producer.
Beechworth is a small wine producing region with a big reputation. The distinctive terroir in this part of the country produces some of our most iconic wines. If you want serious Chardonnay or Rhone-inspired Shiraz/Syrah, you want to get to know Beechworth. Some of the most powerful cool climate wines in the country hail from here, and some of our future stars are making it their home. The future looks very bright for this champion Victorian region.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
