- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Gestalt are on a hot streak, winemakers Anthony Pearce and Craig Turnbull haven’t put a foot wrong with their suite of current release wines. Some of the most well conceived and over-delivering wines in the Adelaide Hills at the moment. If you haven’t tried them, you need to.
This Mataro Grenache would be a great place to start.
It’s loaded with the deep, luxurious fruit that screams the Barossa. The Mataro doing the heavy lifting, all dark and brooding, is the bedrock of the wine. The Grenache component adds some lifted berries and moreish sandy tannins. All this cradled in perfectly judged toasty oak.
Mike Bennie said “It’s decidedly cool, fresh in its approach, but doesn’t forget the ripe flavours of the region.” which sums it up nicely.
Organically grown Barossa fruit handled with astute winemaking, packaged brilliantly and ready to drink now.

What It Tastes Like
This jumps right out at you. You are met head on by a barrage of blue fruit and smoked meats. Violet highlights, mulberry, black cherry; it’s got it all. Deeply set fruit with surprising freshness and a bucket load of spice. Black pepper strung through the slinky mocha tannins. Swishes through the mouth. Could drink an awful lot of this.
93 points “From Barossa Valley. Younger generation producer with some hands in decent vineyards, and producing wines ala mode with a less-is-more philosophy. Some interesting booze coming from Gestalt. This feels like a lighter shade of the Barossa with some substance.
Spicy, herbal, red fruited perfume, offers whiffs of rose petal, sarsaparilla, cola too. It’s bloody good to sniff on. Medium weight with sinewy, firm tannin profile and succulent acidity, the wine hits the red fruit-spice-herbal matrix in a really pleasing way. It’s decidedly cool, fresh in its approach, but doesn’t forget the ripe flavours of the region. Lovely carriage across the palate, silky then puckering. Yum.”
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
A brilliant lifted nose of mulberry, cherry tobacco, violets, spices and cured meats yields to a clean, linear palate showing cherry compote, black plum, mocha and a hint of mint. Balanced acid and beautifully fine tannins produce a distinctly medium weight, highly drinkable wine.

About the Producer
This funky young label is the brainchild of Craig Turnbull and Anthony Pearce. Gestalt (meaning an organised whole considered to be greater than the sum of its parts) is about balanced, youthful wines sourced from small organically grown vineyards around South Australia. Whether it is whacky blends of uncool varieties such as Savagnin and Petit Manseng or pure single vineyard, single varietal expression, there is something about these wines which make you want to keep coming back for more!
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
