- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
This interesting red blend is unique to the Freeman estate in the Australian wine landscape. These two varieties, Corvina and Rondinella, are native to Italy and make up the famous Amarone style of wine. The Corona is a slightly different interpretation of the blend, using only freshly picked grapes rather than the traditional dried fruit element that goes into Amarone and the Freeman Secco. Here, Dr. Brian Freeman is looking "to create a mellow yet savoury ‘drink now’ style." and he is right on the money with the 2015 release. It has interest, intrigue and drinkability all at $20 a bottle. A great wine for alternative mid-week drinking.
What it Tastes Like
Dried herbs and red plums with a hint of milk chocolate on the nose. Something almost gamey but not quite. Whiff of goji berry is really intriguing. In the mouth it's softly fruited with a milk chocolate centre framed by red berries and spice. Cool drinking if you are sick of the usual suspect varieties.
Another good year in the NSW Hilltops. Both these late ripening varieties benefitted from the near textbook 2015 season that yielded fully ripe, top condition grapes, picked in early April. Unlike the flagship FREEMAN Secco that relies on the addition of dried grapes to the fermentation, this savoury red blend is crafted solely from freshly harvested Corvina and Rondinella. After pressing, the individual varietal parcels are fermented in stainless steel and aged for 12 months in old oak barrels before blending to create a mellow yet savoury ‘drink now’ style.

About the Producer
Freeman Vineyards was established in 1999 by Dr Brian Freeman, previously the Professor of Wine Science at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga, in the Hilltops region of New South Wales. It boasts some unique varieties in the Hilltops region, a true pioneering producer of NSW.
This is one to watch. The Hilltops in NSW has some huge potential. The high altitude vineyards in this region are producing some of the most epic cool climate Syrah/Shiraz and Cabernet on the market at the moment. With a relatively low profile (for now), the value to be had in this area is second to none. But get in quick, the word is getting out and it wont be that way for long. Love yourself the more refined side of Shiraz? The Hilltops is a place you really need to check out.
