As the Eden Valley embraces Australia’s trend toward drinking more medium bodied styles of red wines, we are going to see a lot more of these Italian varieties popping up from the region.
And if they are anything like the 2015 Frederick Stevenson Montepulciano, that is a very, very good thing.
This young vineyard just outside Angaston is blossoming and winemaker Steve Crawford is reaping the benefits. This release is perhaps his finest to date. It shows the variety’s subtle herbal characters and complex mash-up of sweet and savoury fruit with all the concentration and elegance that the region is famous for.
With 93 points from The Wine Front’s Mike Bennie, this is one of the classiest versions on Montepulciano we have seen this year.

From the Eden Valley.
Fruit sourced from Tim Fechner’s property, just north of Angaston.
Again, slightly bolder than the 2014, which was slightly bolder than the 2013 release, a sign of the vineyard coming of age, but still-mid weighted, bright fruited, rustic tannin with fresh acid.
Poor limestone soil, +/- 350m above sea level, picked late in April.
Hand picked, plunged, pressed, bottled, labelled and loved.
4000 bottles produced.

About the Producer
The Frederick Stevenson project was started as a covert operation, an underground label from Steve Crawford who has a day job at a much bigger, fancy winery. The Vine Vale was his first experiment.
Eden Valley is the cooler more elegant brother of the brawny Barossa. Renowned for slick Shiraz, floral and lifted Riesling and even some stonkingly good Cabernet, the wines of this area provide a great counterpoint to the usual out and out power that South Australian wine has become known for.
