- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Tony Fikkers is flying at the moment. His vineyard selection in the Yarra Valley is impeccable and the winemaking choices he is employing are very sharp.
This Pinot Noir comes from a single vineyard in Yarra Junction, a product of the glorious 2015 vintage which has been much talked about - and with good reason.
This release showcases much of the savoury, herbal side of Pinot Noir. Whole bunches utilised to great effect, hands off management through the fermentation process, just letting the fruit run its own course.
You will have to be quick if you want to try this wine, the 130 dozen release will be snapped up by those who enjoy the slightly grungier side of Pinot Noir in no time.
What It Tastes Like
“Has all the makings: the colour is good, the bouquet with dark (not black) fruits and a spicy backdrop, the palate combining bright dark cherry and strawberry fruits framed by a carefully crafted oak frame. The spice and forest floor elements will come through well over the next few years, gaining it higher points.” - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

92 points. “Certainly a good amount of whole bunch pepper and spice here as an introduction to the wine. Then it’s into some bright cherry fruit, subtle cinnamon and vanilla oak, with leaf litter and subtle smokiness below. Medium bodied, clean red fruits, again the smokiness, with gentle grip of graphite tannin, clean acidity and a gently sweet, spice and strawberried finish. Good drink. Lots of personality.”

About the Producer
Fikkers is the one man operation of Yarra Valley winemaker Anthony Fikkers, and it’s a name we will be hearing much more of. Working with a range of local growers, Fikkers is all about small batch, hand made wines made in unique styles and with minimal intervention. You won’t see the wines on many store shelves because there just aren’t enough of them, but they are absolutely worth trying and add enormous variety to the Yarra Valley landscape.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
No variety captures the hearts and minds of the wine lover quite like Pinot Noir. It’s the unicorn of many a winemaker. Notoriously fickle to grow, this delicate red variety can deliver a kaleidoscope of flavours and aromas, from the bright and floral to the moody and mysterious and everything in between. The cooler regions of Australia are where Pinot Noir is most at home. Look to Tasmania and Victoria for the best examples, with some quality wines beginning to show from the Great Southern and from the cooler parts of NSW. Falling in love with Pinot Noir can be a life long affair, beware the charms of this most enchanting of grapes.
