The Great Southern is being re-energised with a group of young, creative producers taking a fresh look at this high-quality and diverse wine region. One of these up-and-coming producers is Express Winemakers. Winemakers Ryan O'Meara and Pete Pedro are dancing to the beat of their own drum, crafting easy-going and delicious wines like this 2015 Syrah. This isn't Great Southern Shiraz as we know it. It's just light-to-medium bodied, and with soft tannins and minimal oak influence it is made for rapid, joyous drinking. 20 minutes in the fridge will do it no harm, and if you're after an approachable, natural-feeling Shiraz for immediate drinking then look no further.

I was fascinated by these expressions of Great Southern, WA, wine. La Violetta, Brave New Wine, these guys, a couple of others in the wings, something in the water over there… This is syrah from a single vineyard left on its skins for a short period of time then sent to old oak for hanging out. The cool nights and mild Summer/Autumn days of Kalgan on the South coast of WA ensure a long, slow ripening process for this fruit and assists in maintaining the vibrant natural acidity of the Syrah grown there. This wine was fermented 100% whole bunch by wild yeast and only spent a brief six days on skins to create an immediately smashable red. The wine spent 9 months in old oak casks before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

About the Producer
Express Winemakers Ryan O’Meara and Pete Pedro haven’t been around all that long. 2011 was their maiden vintage, but in that short amount of time they have made a lot of friends. Their wines focus on “balanced vineyards from around Western Australia’s Great Southern region with unique character”, and they are a terrific example of the ever-rising tidal wave of young and funky WA producers reinventing the west!
The Great Southern is the largest wine region in the country. Though more and more, the label “Great Southern” is becoming redundant. It is the sub-regional exploration of terroir which is distinguishing this region. From Frankland River to Porongorup, from Mount Barker to Denmark, the detailed and stylish wines emerging from these sub-regions are some of the most intriguing in the country. No longer a “poor man’s Margaret River”, whether you love Riesling, Cabernet, Shiraz or Pinot, this stunning cool climate region will blow you away with the value and refinement inherent in everything it produces. And the good thing is, it is only getting better.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades.
