Exciting wine here, from the hands of winemaker Wes Pearson. This is Grenache from a vineyard in the Clarendon sub-region of McLaren Vale. A vineyard that was planted 90 years ago. As Campbell Mattinson noted in his review, this strikes that elusive balance between finesse and power effortlessly. If you like Grenache while it's rippling with primary fruit, there is plenty of joy to be had here already. However, if you are looking for something that will look all the better in a few years time, this will equally fit the bill. Another wine to add to McLaren Vale's impressive list of excellent Grenache. Only 100 dozen made & 96 points from James Halliday.
What it Tastes Like
_93 points. "McLaren Vale grenache is such a star nowadays. It’s more about finesse than power, though it doesn’t lack the latter. This is all red berries and anise, dry spices, orange peel and florals, though the combined effect is better than the individual parts. It’s a wine drawn with a fine tip, rather than with a broad brush. It presents quite beautifully." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
96 points "An exotic grenache with scents of Turkish delight, violet and kirsch, hailing from 90yo vines in Clarendon. The wine was fully destemmed which seems counterintuitive in a region with wines often requiring all the structural attributes that they can glean from the fruit, stems and all. Yet this is sumptuous. The tannins sandy, detailed and svelte; the acidity gentle, but there. Ethereal." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion) 93 points. An array of red cherry, rhubarb and then tangy red fruit, it’s gentle, dusty and showcases the withering old vine Grenache just as Wes says. Don’t be fooled by the light tannins, this is long and utterly authentic, if just a fraction warming through the finish. For now, I prefer the Boomstick, but in 5 years time this will be the star, particularly when some gamey complexity joins the party." - Andrew Graham (Oz Wine Review)

The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
Grenache is the great sleeping giant of Australian red wine. We are the custodians of the oldest producing Grenache vines in the world, some ancient vineyards planted as far back as the 1850’s. Modern Australian Grenache is a different beast to the wines of yesteryear, they are more youthful and vibrant, showing bright red fruit characters, silky tannins and a delicious array of spices. With the viticultural resources we have at our disposal in this country, Australia can be one of the world’s leading producers of this variety, making wines that easily rival the best of Europe.
