- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The De Iuliis Family have been making Shiraz in the Hunter Valley since 2001. Patriarch of the family Joss De Iuliis planted 20ha of vines back in 1990 but it wasn’t until son Michael finished his degree in oenology from the world famous Roseworthy University in SA that they started to produce their own wines. The business has taken off thanks to great wines like this 2015 Hunter Shiraz. Taken from the original plantings by his father, along with the Steven vineyard and the Talga Road vineyard, Mike’s Shiraz is elegant, earthy, structured and a great example of what the Hunter has to offer. This is a steal for any lover of the Hunter.
What it Tastes Like
Earth, red leather, spice. Medium bodied with ample sweet red fruits, a dab of sweet oak, and sour red fruits all roll through the mouth. Simply delicious. Great blood plum, and some cherry. Nice soft fruit character and some brightness which is super attractive for Hunter at this price.
One of the great wines of Australia, Hunter Shiraz is powerful as it is subtle. Everything is in balance: Pure ripe blackberry fruit flavours, some spice and earthy characters and round soft tannins.
Closure: Screw Cap
Bottle Size: 750ml
Alcohol: Drink Until: 2022
About the Producer
De Iuliis - pronounced [de uli ~ iss] - are one of the brightest stars from the Hunter Valley. Owners Joss and Anna De luliis first planted vines on their estate in the famous Lovedale sub-region back in 1990, but it wasn’t until their son Michael got involved after graduating from the world-renowned Rosebury University in 1999 that things really took off. Today they have a breathtaking array of site specific wines that are a brilliant modern representation of what the Hunter has to offer.
The Hunter Valley is the home of Semillon in Australia. Arguably the best in the world, Hunter Semillon is one of Australia’s most truly unique wine styles. Add to that the fact that have been producing some of Australia’s best quality Shiraz for over a century and you can see why this is one of our most loved wine regions. But with a new generation of winemakers comes innovation. Now we are seeing risks being taken, new varieties being planted and some inspired winemaking which is writing a new chapter in the Hunter Valley’s rich history. We can’t wait to see what happens next.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
