The CRFT Single Vineyard Pinot Noirs explore special sites around the Piccadilly Valley in the Adelaide Hills.
The Arranmore vineyard is now owned and farmed organically by CRFT duo Candice and Frewin. The fruit from this site gets better each year due to their careful tending. The 2015 release is their best to date.
Made with around 30% whole bunches and a little carbonic maceration, this release has a great balance of sweet and savoury characters and loads of charm.
This is a delicate, shy Pinot Noir with style and beautiful mouthfeel. Give it plenty of air and it sings from the glass.
What It Tastes Like
Woodsmoke and sweet earthen characters over red and blue fruits. Subtle sweet/sour mulberry and cherry in the mouth. Beautiful mouthfeel too, so balanced. Supple and easy flowing with excellent tannins. Gorgeous wine.
Arranmore Vineyard is owned and farmed by Candice and Frewin. Purchased in March this year (2016), the vineyard has been converted to organic farming practices.

Soil: Rich dark loam with clay and gravel mix, small pieces of quartz and ironstone sprinkled throughout.
Hand-picked, gentle destem to retain whole berries with 20% whole bunches, 5 day cold soak prior to fermentation in stainless steel.
Gentle hand plunge twice daily, allowing ferment temperature to peak at 30°C, 14 days on skins.
Matured for 10 months in 100% French oak barrels, 15% new oak, lees stirred in barrel for 2 months.
Unfined, unfiltered, vegan.

The CRFT story is exciting, and I just love everything about it. Husband and wife team of Frewin Ries and Candice Helbig both gained extensive winemaking experience for large companies like Cloudy Bay (Frewin) and Hardys (Helbig), before launching into CRFT with the 2013 vintage. They only produce tiny volumes of all their wines, and their philosophy is all about minimally interfered with single vineyard wines that truly express their time and place. High quality, individual wines.
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
No variety captures the hearts and minds of the wine lover quite like Pinot Noir. It’s the unicorn of many a winemaker. Notoriously fickle to grow, this delicate red variety can deliver a kaleidoscope of flavours and aromas, from the bright and floral to the moody and mysterious and everything in between. The cooler regions of Australia are where Pinot Noir is most at home. Look to Tasmania and Victoria for the best examples, with some quality wines beginning to show from the Great Southern and from the cooler parts of NSW. Falling in love with Pinot Noir can be a life long affair, beware the charms of this most enchanting of grapes.
