- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The visionary team at Coriole in Mclaren Vale have been pioneers of Italian varietals since 1985 making them one of the godfathers of Mediterranean wines in this country. Aside from producing one of the most collectable Shirazes in the country, the Lloyd Reserve, Coriole has made it their mission to exemplify just how conducive “the Vale” is to Italian varieties. Their Sangiovese is widely regarded by many as a benchmark wine by both 'Sangio' connoisseurs and beginners alike. The 2015 feels a bit brighter and more invigorated than the last couple of iterations but the quality is undeniably still there. This is the perfect place to start if you are looking to explore Italian varieties. Complex, affordable and outrageously delicious!
What it Tastes Like
There’s sweet jubey raspberry, dark bitter chocolate and an element of earth and savouriness on the nose. But lingering in the background is a surprising, almost musk stick character which makes you crave another waft. The palate shows the perfect combination of cherries and darker fruits with surreptitious oak and the fine powdery tannin that you want from a sangio. It finishes with good acid and delicate spice that leaves you with enough room to ruminate on it for a moment before the next morsel of your dinner is consumed. It feels like a velvet coated cherry-blanket which is cuddling your mouth.
96 points "Coriole was the first to plant sangiovese in Australia ('85), this wine being its 29th consecutive release. Its colour is bright and clear crimson, the bouquet and palate riding high on a cornucopia of cherries of every description, the tannins ripe and interwoven with the fruit. A seriously good sangio." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion) 92 points. "Red fruits, whiff of fennel seed, sightly sour edged, raw almonds. Fresh, medium bodied, light rasp of tannin, slight warmth, good amount of depth, savoury and clean fresh finish of good length." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
Sangiovese was pioneered in Australia by Coriole Vineyards with the first plantings in 1985. It provided a contrasting style to Shiraz, the great tradition of McLaren Vale. It has proved to be ideally suited to the warm maritime climate of the region. The fruit is sourced from some of the oldest producing Sangiovese vines in Australia.

About the Producer
Coriole is a McLaren Vale instutution. One of the first in the country to expreiment with alternative varieties, they are true trailblazers of the industry and one of our favourite producers.
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
