- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
It would be hard to find a better value, better-reviewed wine from a top flight Shiraz producer in the country than the 2015 Hilltops Shiraz from Clonakilla.
It’s “Hilltops shiraz at its most elegant.” according to Campbell Mattinson. A selection of premium vineyards across the region contributing to the wine, it shows all the finesse of premium cool-climate Shiraz/Syrah without the hefty pricetag.
95 points from James Halliday, 93 points from Campbell Mattinson and the label of “Superb.” from Nick Stock, this is a no-brainer. If you want Clonakilla in your cellar but aren’t regularly quaffing $90+ wines, the Hilltops is a wine with great pedigree than can be consumed now or in 10 years time.
What It Tastes Like
“Hilltops shiraz at its most elegant. Yes. This is good. Complete. Spicy, well-fruited, taut but expressive. It’s listed at 14.5% alc/vol but it doesn’t feel it; it has a modesty. Red and black berries with tobacco, stonefruit, anise and crushed dry spice. If mid-weight, savoury-accented reds are your go, you can’t go wrong here.” - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
95 points. “This is another cracking release under the Hilltops label. Superbly balanced with an impeccably silky and fine palate, it is a wine you must put in the cellar: it is lovely now, but will reward those who can resist for as long as possible.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

About the Producer
Clonakilla is one of the true icons of the Australian wine scene.
Since its inception, it has been one of (if not THE) leading lights of the Australian cool climate wine insurgence. They boast one of the most collectable wines in the country with their Shiraz Viognier and are considered the benchmark for all things Canberra.
Quite simply, one of the true gems in the Australian Wine Industry crown.
This is one to watch. The Hilltops in NSW has some huge potential. The high altitude vineyards in this region are producing some of the most epic cool climate Syrah/Shiraz and Cabernet on the market at the moment. With a relatively low profile (for now), the value to be had in this area is second to none. But get in quick, the word is getting out and it wont be that way for long. Love yourself the more refined side of Shiraz? The Hilltops is a place you really need to check out.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
