- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Dan Buckle’s winemaking journey has taken him from Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne to Coldstream Hills, Langi Ghiran, Domaine Chandon, and now, back to his home in Mornington Peninsular with his passion project that is Circe.
This label was conceived during the Langi days with his partner in crime Aaron Drummond. “I wanted a creative outlet where I could do whatever I want. We wanted to get back to what the Mornington does best - which is mostly Pinot Noir”, Dan told us when he popped in.
The Peninsular is in his blood. Heard of the Buckle Vineyard made famous by Tuck’s Ridge? Well, Dan’s dad planted that vineyard in the 80’s. He’s one of “those” Buckles.
The 2015 vintage was marked by great quality and small quantity. The three Pinot vineyards he sources across the region were singing through ‘15 and the final wine hits the mark perfectly.
In his 93 point review, Campbell Mattinson remarked, “The word meticulous comes to mind.”
That sums it up nicely, we think.
What It Tastes Like
“It’s pure and spotlessly clean, with just-enough tannin, flavour and length to hold your interest throughout; and no more. It tastes of macerated cherries, roasted nuts, woodspice and twigs, and feels both flush with acidity and velvety to the touch. The word meticulous comes to mind.” - Campbell Mattinson
93 points. “Beautifully structured and impressively complex. It’s not the most intense wine but it has both class and drinkability written all over it; a classic combination. Twigs, roasted nuts, macerated cherries and wood spice. An autumnal wine that will perform well at any time of the year.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
93 points. “This 2015 release of a Mornington Peninsula pinot noir from Circe carries more than a passing resemblance to previous releases.
It’s pure and spotlessly clean, with just-enough tannin, flavour and length to hold your interest throughout; and no more. It tastes of macerated cherries, roasted nuts, woodspice and twigs, and feels both flush with acidity and velvety to the touch. The word meticulous comes to mind.”
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
Another great vintage for the Peninsula, with small crops and great quality. Darker than our Gippsland Pinot. Rich colour. Lifted cherry and raspberry fruits; rose petal perfume and cinnamon. Long, fine tannic structure.

About the Producer
Dan Buckle - the former long-time chief winemaker at the iconic Mt Langi winery - leads two lives. By day he is Senior Winemaker at the mind-bendingly-huge Domaine Chandon, by night he is carefully crafting tiny batches of gorgeous Mornington Peninsular Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for his own label Circe. His love of the Burgundian varieties comes through in both big scale production and small. These are beautifully fine and detailed wines, truly made by hand and in tiny volumes.
The Mornington Peninsula has become a go-to destination for lovers of modern Australian Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Mornington’s perfect climatic conditions for producing these varieties has seen it become, in only a relatively short time, one of the premier regions for these varieties in the country. The wines are beautiful. The best examples are wines which show a restrained power. Both intensity and elegance. It’s a region which will continue to blossom and mature for many years to come.
No variety captures the hearts and minds of the wine lover quite like Pinot Noir. It’s the unicorn of many a winemaker. Notoriously fickle to grow, this delicate red variety can deliver a kaleidoscope of flavours and aromas, from the bright and floral to the moody and mysterious and everything in between. The cooler regions of Australia are where Pinot Noir is most at home. Look to Tasmania and Victoria for the best examples, with some quality wines beginning to show from the Great Southern and from the cooler parts of NSW. Falling in love with Pinot Noir can be a life long affair, beware the charms of this most enchanting of grapes.
