- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
This is one of the original Australian Vermentino’s by one of the country’s leading producers of Italian variety wines.
The Chalmers family imported this clone of Vermentino direct from Italy in the late 90’s. Since then, they have continued to refine the wine’s style.
This is a crisp and racy style of Vermentino with all the signature spice and savouriness the variety is famous for.
If you are looking for a good alternative to Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris, this hit the ‘classic dry white’ zone with a bit more zip and pizzazz. 93 points from James Halliday this year, and still one of the benchmarks for the wine style in this country.
What It Tastes Like
“These Italian varieties need acidity to keep their line and focus, and Chalmers knows that better than most. Lemon drop/zest, apple and citrus with a savoury nuance keeps this in the money.” - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

This wine is made from the Chalmers’ Heathcote Vineyard, which is planted on the rich red Cambrian earth of the famous Mt Camel Range. The 2015 Vermentino is made from the VCR1 clone imported by Chalmers Nurseries in the late 90s. The 2015 Vermentino was hand harvested then whole bunch-pressed 24 hours later and wild fermented on fine solids in stainless steel tanks. The temperature of fermentation is limited to 14 degrees. It is bottled after about 6 months.

About the Producer
No family in Australia has done more for the continued emergence of alternative grape varieties than the Chalmers. Since the mid-1980’s Bruce and Jenni Chalmers have been responsible for importing up to 70 alternative varieties into Australia, culminating in them establishing the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show in 1999. They are true visionaries of the Australian wine scene and we are eternally grateful for their forward thinking and courage to bravely plant what no one had planted before them. They brought with them the first ripples of the tsunami of Italian varieties hitting the Australian market.
Heathcote’s reputation is for big Shiraz. And they do it so well. But the times they are a changin’ with Italian varieties such as Fiano, Sangiovese, Nero d’Avola and Sagrantino all finding themselves well at home in the ancient Cambrian soils.
