- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Lock & Key Reserve Tempranillo has been a very successful wine for Jason Brown over the last few years. The fruit from his Hilltop vineyard has produced wines that have been incredibly popular on the wine show circuit, picking up Gold Medals and Trophies at every turn. This is the first release of the Cato Tempranillo, a souped-up version of this famous Spanish variety. It's all Jason's own fruit, it sees 100% new oak for twelve months and perfectly encapsulates the power of the 2015 Hilltops vintage. This is a serious Tempranillo, filled to the brim with sweet, luscious fruit and dry, savoury spice. If you've loved the Lock & Key Tempranillo in the past then this is going to sit you back in your chair.
What it Tastes Like
"Bright purple. Vibrant and bright with cherries dusted in dark cocoa, along with subtle notes of oak. The palate is vibrant and bright, the flavours concentrated and luscious; more cherries and dark berries, with hints of dark bitter chocolate. Medium bodied but the flavours are intense and there’s an exceptional combination of vibrant fruits coupled with lovely, moreish grainy tannins." - Jason Brown (Winemaker)
93 points. "All things considered, this is the most successful of the three Cato wines, simply because Moppity has taken a new road to travel. It's also the most powerful of the trio, and not the easiest to enjoy - which I didn't expect for one moment." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
Two different clones grafted onto 43 yo rootstocks and planted to three blocks with varying aspects at an elevation of 600m. The fruit was cold soaked pre fermentation and matured in new French oak barrels for 12 months.

About the Producer
In less than 5 years Moppity have captured the wine trade’s imagination with their wonderfully balanced, concentrated and expressive cool climate wines. Take note, this winery are one of the rising stars if Australian wine.
This is one to watch. The Hilltops in NSW has some huge potential. The high altitude vineyards in this region are producing some of the most epic cool climate Syrah/Shiraz and Cabernet on the market at the moment. With a relatively low profile (for now), the value to be had in this area is second to none. But get in quick, the word is getting out and it wont be that way for long. Love yourself the more refined side of Shiraz? The Hilltops is a place you really need to check out.
Tempranillo is a hot-blooded Spanish variety that has found a happy home in many Australian wine regions. Typically, Tempranillo will be medium bodied, showing silky darker fruits and tannins riddled with exotic spices. The wines are more-ish and incredibly well suited to alfresco Australian dining. Unsurprisingly, Tempranillo is one of the country’s most popular emerging varieties and is set to have a big future on Australian shores.
