Ever tried a Saint Macaire before? Nope, neither had we! Turns out it's a little known red Bordeaux variety that has become practically extinct in France but seems to be kicking along in Australia and also in California. Stylistically it's pretty round and full-bodied, with a Petit Verdot-like nose of violets and spice. It's mighty drinkable actually, and with a $14 price tag and the follow up to the Trophy-winning 2013 release, there's no reason not to give this different drop a whirl!
What it Tastes Like
Lots of spice and herbs and black fruits on the nose. The palate is rich and warming, with lots of fruit, lots of oak, lots of tannins, but thankfully no excessive alcohol heat. It's really quite fun to drink actually - soft and plummy, plenty of spice. It's a little here and a little there but for the price there's a lot of appeal. Nice drinking.
2013 vintage: Trophy for Best Young Red. - NSW Wine Awards 2014 2013 vintage: 89 points. "It’s all unusual scents and shapes, but I like it. Spicy, woody, earthy and dark fruited to sniff on, lighter than expected to taste with crisp acidity and light, sandy tannins. Sort of sits in its own jumbled way in medium-bodied has some pretty dark fruit characters, squeeze of lime, hit of cherry-cola and finishes plush. Easy drinking style, not a lot of complexity, but destined for mid-afternoons sitting on the verandah and the like. Worth getting some for interest and drinkability for sure." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
Calabria Saint Macaire is an intense deep red colour with a purple hue. It displays a fragrant nose of violets, rose petals and spice that are unique attributes of Saint Macaire. The full bodied palate exhibiting ripe fruit is spicy with well integrated vanillin oak characters. The palate is soft with a warm finish of great length with fine grained tannins. Excellent to drink now, this wine will age well in the medium to long term.
