This Brave New Wine is a brave new take on Great Southern Riesling. This is a bit of a mind-bender. Served in a black glass you would swear it's a red. This is Riesling aged under flor in ceramic egg and an old French puncheon, with oxidisation and skin contact bringing extra elements into the fold. With all the craziness of the winemaking process Andries and Yoko still maintain a freshness and drinkability to the wine - it never quite goes 'too-far'. It's its own thing. A wine unto itself. Orange wine fans need only apply, this one is for you.
What it Tastes Like
Smells like cherry cola and campari! In the mouth it's all blood orange with the peels on, sea spray and chalk. Has a tart red apple and a refreshing balsamic vinegar kick to the finish. So much tannin. It grips like a red with a gentle creaminess in toe. Wicked. Wicked drinking.
90 points. "Burned orange colour. It’s murky textured and yet bitingly fresh. The wine smells like mustard and curry powder and cider. What? Something like that. The palate has a cidery-quality too, with an almost balsamic freshness to acidity, but not quite in that zone. It’s angular and yet kind of softens to finish. It’s a wild party in the mouth, that is for sure. If you’re into orange wines and want something unique to set on the table, well, here you go. The Great Southern is the largest wine region in the country. Though more and more, the label “Great Southern” is becoming redundant. It is the sub-regional exploration of terroir which is distinguishing this region. From Frankland River to Porongorup, from Mount Barker to Denmark, the detailed and stylish wines emerging from these sub-regions are some of the most intriguing in the country.
