- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The name 'Violet Hour' refers to the fading light owners Andre Bondar and Selina Kelly saw on the horizon as they picked the last bunches of Shiraz for their first ever release, the 2012 edition of this wine. A violet sky, a beautiful wine, and a new future ahead for the couple and their vines. The 'Violet Hour' is pound for pound, one of the most exciting releases we have seen this year. It tastes as stylish as it looks, it hits that sweet-spot for all red wine lovers - a combination of elegance and power. The pedigree of the McLaren Vale vineyard is second to none. With the cult-like popularity of this winery at the moment, none of their releases seem to last long. The quality of the Shiraz speaks for itself. Put simply, if you like McLaren Vale Shiraz - this is a must buy.
What it Tastes Like
"Mainlining McLaren Vale shiraz. That grunt of sweet earth, choc-mocha on ripe black and red berry scents, dash of cassis, an arm of a saltbush. It’s comforting in its rich, dense perfume. The wine tastes of dark fruit, more salt bush greenery and saline character, a lick of new leather, anise and clove spice. Lush and long and supple, it’s a hedonistic shiraz kept in check by bright acidity and fine oak and fruit tannin. Moreish, generous red of high charisma and evident quality." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Hand-picked fruit from 65+ year old vines planted on our Rayner Vineyard in McLaren Vale. This wine pays homage to the Bondar style with fragrance and a lightness of touch. We used a proportion of whole bunches, which helps to create that lightness, and adds dimensions of flavour and a silky mouth feel. Aged in mostly older French oak, Violet Hour should improve nicely over the next five years or so and will suit lighter meat dishes and pasta beautifully.

About the Producer
Bondar is the baby of husband-and-wife team Andre Bondar and Selina Kelly, and winners of the 2017 Australian Wine Companion’s Best New Winery! They have purchased the famous Rayner vineyard in McLaren Vale, crafting stunning Shiraz and Grenache from here, along with beautifully pure Adelaide Hills Chardonnay. I’ll leave it to them to describe what their extremely exciting venture is all about: _“Our vision has always been to make wines that create a little intrigue, that are a little different. We want to make wines that are bright, structured, mid-weight yet concentrated in flavour with a savoury element.” Super value, tiny production and delicious to drink!
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
