This organically grown Shiraz from Margaret River is about as sumptuous as red wine gets from this part of the world.
Ben and Naomi farm their vineyard with tender care and it shows in this Field Blend. At the bottom of the block stands 19 rows of Shiraz split down the middle by a single row of Viognier. They are all picked on the same day, the Viognier then distributed evenly amongst the ferments. From the ground up, the two varieties co-exist in perfect harmony,
In Ben’s words, the 2015 release is “Smooth and slippery and medium bodied, it shows an elegance and depth that is atypical of other wines I have made.”
This wine seriously jumps out of the glass. It’s absolutely stunning from beginning to end.
What It Tastes Like
The aromas kickstart with sweet violets, a bushel of berries, a little savoury/undergrowth character and wisps of smoke. Great stuff. It’s an excellent introduction to what’s to come. The palate is smooth as a glassy lake. Flavoured with milk chocolate covered berries and slippery tannins. It’s a fine leggy wine with loads of sex appeal. Jeez it’s good.
Situated at the bottom of the hill on the more generous soils. This block is dry-grown and predominately Shiraz, however one lonely row of Viognier is right in the middle of it all. The name of this wine is due to the two grape varieties within the block which are grown together, and are fermented together.
When harvested, the row of viognier is hand-picked separately and spread evenly between the picking bins of Shiraz. The grapes are foot-crushed in small half-tonne ferments and hand plunged up to 3 times a day. Before ferment is complete, the wine is gently basket-pressed to seasoned french oak for 10 months. It is then settled out in tank prior to bottling, where it goes to bottle with only sulphites added and stays in bottle for 9 months before release

Margaret River is recognised as one of the country’s finest wine growing regions. The quality of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rival the very best in the world. But Margaret River is no two-trick-pony. There, Tempranillo and Malbec are excelling, Touriga Nacional seems to be quite at home, Chenin Blanc is getting serious and even pockets of Nebbiolo are rearing their heads. Watch this space. Who knows what new surprises are just around the corner from this famous region.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
