- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The 2015 vintage in the Yarra Valley has produced some stunning wines. After more than twenty vintages in the region, Dave Bicknell did not miss the opportunity to make some of his finest Bicknell FC wines to date. The 2015 Applecross Pinot Noir was made in only tiny amounts. Birds having ravaged the vineyard just prior to picking meant yields were microscopic from the Gladysdale vineyard that Dave and Nicky manage. However, the fruit that was salvaged was first class. 100% whole bunches were used in fermentation, depth of flavour is sublime as is the concentration. This is a wonderful Yarra Pinot, one with the structure to cellar beautifully or be opened now and enjoyed after a good decant.
What it Tastes Like
Earth and black cherry flavours strung along an intricate web of tannin. Fruit is intense and inwardly focused on opening, but given time it unfurls in the glass to reveal potpourri dried flowers and herbs. So fine. So lovely.
March 12th harvest. A pitiful yield of 0.6 t/Ha. We had elected during winter to drop the fruiting wire from 800mm to 600mm, so pruning was significant and severe (chainsaw), with expected heavy losses. In the end, the birds were the tragic finale to the story. I estimate that the birds, mostly silver-eyes, took 4t in 3 days just prior to picking. We have since invested in nets. Whole bunch fermentation (100%) over three weeks before pressing to just three barrels for ML and maturation. No new oak, the youngest vessel 3 years old. 10 months sur lie in barrel before blending and bottling, without fining or filtration. One for the cellar, this wines needs decanting to show it’s best.

About the Producer
With the title as James Halliday’s Best New Winery in 2016 and a swathe of whopping reviews, Bicknell FC is one of the most exciting new producers in the country. Led by the husband-and-wife team of David Bicknell and Nicole Harris, Bicknell FC’s focus is entirely on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - both sourced from premium vineyards in the Yarra Valley.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
No variety captures the hearts and minds of the wine lover quite like Pinot Noir. It’s the unicorn of many a winemaker. Notoriously fickle to grow, this delicate red variety can deliver a kaleidoscope of flavours and aromas, from the bright and floral to the moody and mysterious and everything in between. The cooler regions of Australia are where Pinot Noir is most at home. Look to Tasmania and Victoria for the best examples, with some quality wines beginning to show from the Great Southern and from the cooler parts of NSW. Falling in love with Pinot Noir can be a life long affair, beware the charms of this most enchanting of grapes.
