- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Best's Great Western is one of the country's oldest wineries, but they continue to innovate and evolve. Their Bin 1 Shiraz is the ultimate introduction to their famous style. Not sure whether the term 'introduction' befits a previous Jimmy Watson winner, but that just goes to demonstrate the value available here. The 2015 is in great shape. Campbell Mattinson rated it 93+ points, noting, "The combination of quality, style and price make this a no-brainer." There aren't many better and more qualified $25 Shiraz on the market than the 2015 Best's Bin 1 - class and value both high in this release.
What it Tastes Like
"The combination of quality, style and price make this a no-brainer. You can buy this with absolute confidence. It’s fresh-faced and fruit driven but notes of cloves, gum leaves, undergrowth and toasty oak add various other angles and perspectives. There’s a silken, almost creamy aspect to the texture but the fruit remains vigorous; it has the liveliness of nerves. Balance is spot on, so too tannin and length. Go forth. Prosper. Drink well." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
95 points "Bright crimson-purple; fragrant spice, fruit and oak nuances are all on parade from the first whiff. The elegant, medium-bodied palate throws additional light on the complex array of cherry, plum, licorice and oak flavours; supple texture and silky tannins tie the bow on a lovely, dirt cheap shiraz." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion) 93+ points. With the inevitable scarcity of Best’s Thomson Family and Bin 0 Shiraz wines, Bin 1 Shiraz is the wine that gives people their first taste of our style of Great Western Shiraz. Made predominantly from Best’s own vineyards and meticulously crafted with the same attention to detail as the flagship wines, Bin 1 Shiraz represents the essence of Best’s Great Western’s winemaking ideals and the uniqueness of the Great Western region. Bin 1 is a classic, cool climate, aromatic Shiraz, made in a style that is floral, spicy and peppery yet retains generous fruit characteristics and intensity. It is a well-balanced wine where alcohol does not dominate. We make this wine in an elegant, approachable style. We want people to understand that this is a wine made to drink now, savouring the flavour profile from Shiraz made in the Great Western region. Bin 1 is a great accompaniment to food and it celebrates our many years of learning and winemaking history at Best’s Great Western.

About the Producer
Best's Great Western
Best’s is one of the oldest owned family wineries in the country. They are famous for having a “nursery block” housing some of the oldest clonal material for particular varieties anywhere in the world.
Their wines are consistently excellent and they have a vineyard which is envied by much of the wine growing world. With a rich history and an illustrious past, this Victorian icon is one of the true treasures of the Australian wine scene.
History runs deep in Great Western. Some of the country’s oldest, most iconic producers have made a home for themselves here in the far West of Victoria. Shiraz and Riesling are the region’s most iconic varieties, but if you dig a little deeper, amazing examples of Pinot Meunier and other alternative varieties are waiting to be found. These are warm climate wines that maintain class and prestige.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
